TOP 5 PICK!!!

Kessel is younger, cheaper and a more prolific goal scorer than Nash... but I'd still rather have Nash (shoot me.) For me, it would depend with the plus(es) were.

After spending a long time mulling this one over, for me it boils down to one factor.  The only and I mean ONLY reason I take Nash over Kessel is his performance in the Olympics vs. the Russians.  When it comes down to a big game.... as of what I have seen from both players... I would rather have Nash .. but Kessel hasn't had quite the same opportunities and I think there is still a fair bit of headroom there and right now the Leafs need more than just a big game guy.  Nash hasn't led his team anywhere so it's not like he has a track record of winning in the regular season.

For some reason Dreger was reporting Yesterday that Kessel may not be happy in Toronto.

Where, exactly, was Dreger reporting this?

It was an odd FAN590 20/20 report yesterday afternoon. Dreger came on said from everything he's seen and heard of late that he doesn't really know if Kessel is happy in Toronto. That was it. I was thinking 'what the hell was that about?'

I tend to agree. I also see Nash as an upgrade in size, which is what Burke has suggested he would try to address, to accommodate coach Carlyle's style.

Ahh. Well, that's really vague and unconvincing. Basically, unconfirmed reports say Kessel may or may not be unhappy - which is something that seems to pushed by some people every summer since Kessel got here.

It struck me more as being a bizarre snipit to pull from another interview.

It's all speculation.  I heard Dreger on Blue Breakfast this morning on the exact same topic.  He was saying things like "maybe Kessel's not the type of guy who thrives in this fishbowl environment", "perhaps we would want out and play somewhere without a microscope" and on and on.  Sounded like Dreger making a story for the sake of a story.

Either that or a media puppet for the Leafs organization?

I also find it a little weird that a TSN employee in Darren Dreger would be on a Rogers/Sportsnet owned FAN590.

It may have been TSN radio. I switch back and forth for hockey news.

So, basically the same kind of speculative nonsense that surrounded Kessel since the rumours of him being traded to the Leafs started. He certainly thrived in this environment this past season.

Looks like Oilers won't deal the 1st...

It seems like Dreger is making assumptions that because Kessel is a bit introverted and not particularly adept at handling the media, that he's not happy here. He seems pretty comfortable as a Leaf.

Yeah, I mean no playoffs is one thing but the guy still managed top six in goals and points, what does he have to do to actually thrive?

Kessel has already said, just last year, that he loves it in Toronto. I think he said it when all that crap was brought up, because he was unhappy about his play, not his situation. He had a career year last year, why would he all of a sudden not like it in Toronto? Looking for a non-existent story is what I think.

Not sure about Kessel being a more prolific goal scorer. In his 1st 6 seasons in the NHL, Nash had 194 goals. Kessel has 165 after his 1st 6 seasons. However Kessel is probably the better playmaker. Nash is better built for the rough going.

The discussion of whether or not Kessel wants to be traded is moot. The question should be whether or not the Toronto Maple Leafs want to trade Phil Kessel in the right sort of package.

Big question is - which of the two performs best in the style Burke and Carlyle envision this team to play? I think the answer is obvious.
