TOP 5 PICK!!!

It'll be interesting to see TSN's mock tonight. Reinhart and Dumba could be a real wild card here I think. If Murray goes to the Blue Jackets at two and Reinhart or Dumba goes to the Islanders are four, things could get quite sporty at five.

Call me crazy but I'm not locked in to anyone right now. I just kind of want to go with who our scouts feel is the BPA, even if it's a defenseman which I know would be rather unpopular here.

Edit: Though I am rather fascinated with the enigma that is Grigorenko. I just like that he's got the size with that skill in what is clearly a position of need with this organization.

Same, though I'm definitely hoping for Galchenyuk. Also, I have to agree with SGT here:

Galchenyuk is my favourite for sure. Though I'll admit this is based solely on what I've read from scouting agencies, etc. I've barely seen any of these guys play.

I was listening to Pierre McGuire on TSN1050 on the way in to work and it got me thinking:

I'm of the camp that the Leafs almost have to draft a forward on Friday.  But let's say the Leafs end up drafting a d-man such as Murray (whether by moving up or him somehow [doubtful] sliding based on teams jockeying).  Could that be Burke's way of making a guy like Schenn more available to fill a hole up front in a deal, perhaps a bigger one, as there'd be a replacement in tow?

I believe that Burke already has the assets on the blueline to move in order to upgrade the forwards. He has Franson, Gunnarsson or Schenn that he could move in a deal to acquire a forward IMO.
If we land Shultz, that just gives us another defenseman to move somebody else. Burke just absolutely has to move a blueliner at some point before the season starts and I believe wholeheartedly, that he will no doubt pick a forward at the draft.

The thing with Grigorenko, is that even if he he doesn't go to the KHL, there's a chance that the the KHL simply existing can interfere with contract negotiations in the future and cause us to have to pay more to keep him around.

Kind of like what's happening in Winnipeg with Pavelec.

I know it's "sexy" and all to get a forward, but I can't shake this feeling that Murray will be a Top 5 D-man in the league for years to come. Considering Toronto's lack of any kind of defence the last 5 years, I'd be happy drafting Murray, signing Schultz and moving D from there.

The guy's drawn comparisons to Nieds, was not at all out of place at the Worlds according to Tambellini (?), and is what this team is sorely lacking: a defenceman who's a stud at both ends (we seem to have a bunch of 1 enders, as it were).

I'll be happy enough with a top 5 pick forward (mainly Forsberg, Galchenyuk or Yakupov), but my gut says Murray will prove to be one of the best picks of this draft.

I have to think EDM will snag Murray. I don't mind the defenceman pick though if the forwards are gone.

McKenzie said something like, "...if teams are willing to buy the ankle injury and mono excuses for his poor play...", how do teams not take those things like mono in consideration? It was a freak "injury" that would have had him playing well below his highest level, and he still had a decent performance in the playoffs.

Yeah, as I said the other day, if he's there at 5 and we don't take him, I'd need a truck load of convincing that decision was a wise one.

Because he has the same questions Angelo Esposito had and look where he ended up.  Teams are vary wary of guys with possible effort issues.  If the Leafs did their homework on this kid they would know more of the real story than we would.  So would most other teams.

The usual clich? is to "take the best available player" but it always should apply. As for taking a defenseman in the 2012 draft to address years of inept defensive performance in Toronto, that's short-sighted and perhaps a little bit incorrect. In my opinion, the Leafs' lousy defensive record is every bit the fault of the forwards as the defensemen. I'd like to see an overhaul of the forward group first before assuming the defensemen and the goalies are the problem with this team.

They had a scout on the Team 1200 last night, Grant McKegg.  He had some interesting points.

1.  At the end of the day, he thinks that Galchenyuk or Teravainen may be the most talented players to come out of this draft
2.  Right now, Yakupov is the best player available, but in a couple of years, may not be.
3.  Grigerenko did not display the type of compete level that you would hope to see in a top 5 prospect.
4.  All drafts are crapshoots, but this one more so due to the number of players rated to be top picks that suffered injuries throughout the year.  Made it hard to see their progression.

There's a mock draft on yahoo sports right now. The have the top 5:

Yakupov
Forsberg
Grigorenko
Galchenyuk
Murray

Brophy on Fan590 today at Noon said he expects Burke to come back with NHL ready players and that means trading the pick or trading down and getting a player who is ready.

Two scenarios that make me puke.

How would trading down get a player that is ready?

Or does he mean, move the 5th for, say the 10th and an NHL player?  If that is true, I'm not sure how much of an impact that player could likely have if their team is willing to deal them to move up a handful of spots?

The more scouting reports I hear about Grigerenko and his so called lack of compete level, the more I see Burke taking a pass on him. I also see a KHL flight risk with this guy. PASS.

Depends on who the pick is for.  I can stomach the 5th going for Staal or Nash.  For some reason, less so if it goes in a deal for Luongo.
