TOP 5 PICK!!!

I am preparing for the absolute worst case scenario tomorrow- because knowing our luck... anyways...

I would say the worst case scenario would be if the top 4 picks go (in some order):  Yakupov, Murray, Forsberg and Galchenyuk.

Then what do we do at #5?  Probably too late to trade the pick for an established player.  No time to get that deal into place.

a) Draft Reilly?
b) Draft Grigorenko?
c) Draft Dumba?
d) Draft someone else?
e) Trade down and pick someone like a Faksa and get an extra 2nd rounder.

What do you think?  Personally, I want no part of Grigorenko... I would either take Reilly or trade down (draft Faksa) and get an additional 2nd I guess.

I really don't see it playing out differently than this tomorrow. That's why I keep bringing up Dumba's name. He just fits into the mold Burke is trying to build.

Same.  I think those 4 are gone at #5.  Ideally, I'd want Galchenyuk or Forsberg but I don't see either lasting.

I definitely think Dumba would interest Burke and would not be shocked at all if he's our pick.

I would be absolutely SHOCKED if we drafted Grigorenko.  IMO there is 0% chance of that happening, even if he is still their at #35.  No joke, I think Burke doesn't even recognize his existence.

I've been lumping these five guys all along hoping the Leafs would draft at least one of them, and I still feel this.  But I too hold reservations on Grigorenko.  I'm hoping another team in front of us makes the decision for us.

This team won't be recognizing the existence of a number one centre for a long time then.

In 7 years at the helm of a draft Burke has drafted a grand total of 0 Russians.

With such a high crucial pick, he is not going to start.  Especially with one who's stock is plummeting, who's heart is being questioned, who's age is in debate and who's desire to play in the NHL vs. KHL is also being questioned.

Noooo chance.

Burke said he made his decision on the Sedins after seeing them at the World Championships and quickly changed his mind.  He could easily have had the same thing happen with Grigorenko, or had a chat with Roy about him.  I doubt Burke is going to care about some journalist rumours from anonymous sources when he is able to do his own scouting and interviewing.

On hfboards a poster said they talked to Burke at one of the Marlies playoff games and that Burke said something about almost all #1 C's are homegrown guys.  Seemed like a legit story, so I expect if Grigorenko is there he would take him.  He need only look to the Awards last night to see the impact of a star Russian player.

In that scenario, I'd draft Grigorenko, Teravainen, or Dumba, in that order.

I'm confident Grigorenko will play in the NHL. I'll take him at his word and his actions (i.e. saying he wants to play in the NHL and that's why he's currently playing junior hockey in Canada)

And, really, why mess with success?

Hey, I'm not saying I agree with the no Russian thing...  I am just saying it would be very uncharacteristic of him to pick one, especially one with so many question marks, with such a high pick.

It's almost to the point where the Leafs should just do the exact opposite of whatever it is they decide to do.

It worked for George Costanza.

I genuinely don't think Brian Burke is going to base his decision on a player's nationality.

That's really going to depend on whether or not those questions exist in Burke's mind, or not.

Burke, I am tired of all your macho head games.

Just because he hasn't doesn't mean he won't. He's also not going to make that decision based on the tripe the media is spewing. He's scouted these guys himself. His scouting staff has scouted these guys. He and his team have interviewed these guys. He has the combine results. He has so much more information that we or most of the media guys do that you can pretty much throw out anything that is being said, because, the truth is, for the most part, the media guys have absolutely no idea what the teams are thinking and what they actually feel about these prospects.

^This ^... and the bolded part is just so super important. Really, these media guys should stop trying to pretend they know what's going on in these guy's heads.
