Training Camp: September 16 - October 1

I don't recall the Leafs being more hard on a player than Kadri. I mean, maybe the expectations really are that high and it's a good thing but on the other hand....

Hmm, any chance anyone takes a chance on Caputi?

Unlikely. Just about every team has a player in a similar situation to Caputi. I doubt anyone sees him as an upgrade on what they have right now.

And if someone want him for their minor affiliate, they'd have to claim him then immediately put him back on waivers, right? Not that that would cause a big problem at this stage.

An I'm really not sure he's up to the task (at least not yet). A lot of pressure on a first rounder in Toronto. I think too many believe that a top ten pick is a lock for the NHL when it doesn't always work out that way.

Kadri needs to simplify his game at this point. He's still thinks his OHL dipsy doodles are going to fool veteran NHL defencemen. He's got great hands and loads of talent but he has to learn the game at the NHL level first.

Kadri looks small still, lazy at times, not ready for the top 6 and not enough of an edge for the third line.  I see Frattin making the team over him.  Really pulling for Kadri but still not quite ready, too bad.

I haven't been able to watch much of the pre-season, but if Frattin and Kadri are playing at the same level, Frattin's age gives him a pretty big advantage. A 23 year old, especially one who attended college, should have a physical and mental edge over a 20 year old.

To be honest I didn't and don't expect Kadri to make the team this year. He still has a lot to learn and a lot of time to learn it.

Yes and this is a skilled small 20 year old who in the ideal role will see a lot of ice time against top players on other teams.  This isn't a third or 4th line big bodied mucker. I see no problem in being patient with Kadri.  Frattin is the better fit at this point.

Burke is throwing Kadri under the bus

My money is on Frattin staying over Kadri

They were hard on Kadri all last season and had great words about Frattin after he played 1 NHL game so it seems like they were high on Frattin for a while. Doesn't surprise me in the least if he made the team over Kadri.

Maybe they think Kadri is more of a top 6? Although, I don't really see how Frattin has outplayed Kadri at this point, based on what I saw.

I haven't really watched the preseason all that closely, but from what I've seen I haven't really noticed Frattin tearing things up.  I do remember seeing Kadri use his body a lot more, but then maybe I was paying attention to Kadri more than Frattin so my perspective was altered.  So yeah, in my mind neither one has really stood out.

I think the problem with Kadri is he's trying moves that work in the OHL, not the NHL and he's turning the puck over too much. At least that's what I've seen from him. I'd prefer him to get sent down to the Marlies to start the year off.

Right now, Frattin is playing a simpler game, i.e. getting pucks to the net, getting the puck deep, not committing blue line turnovers, etc.  Kadri is more than capable of all of that, but in the past couple of games he's regressed to trying to be too fancy.  I think that's going to be the determinant - which guy can commit and be more consistent with doing the little things.  If Kadri can get in that headspace, he should have the edge.  If not, the door opens for Frattin, imo.

He has to be more responsible, yeah, but I wouldn't tell him to not be creative or imaginative out there. I think that would shut the door on his development.

I don't think it's about stifling creativity and even risk-taking, but rather it's about learning to use your teammates better.
