Training Camp: September 16 - October 1

I predict Scrivens, Lashoff, Crabb, Boyce, Frattin and Rosehill to be the final 6 cuts if Brown and Lombardi are healthy.

Really? In the post game, on LeafsTV last night, Burkie said 'if the coach (who picks the team) wants to carry 8 defensemen, I'm okay with that'.

I like Lashoff, I hope he does stick around.

I'm a little surprised that Lashoff is still around. He really doesn't have a chance at sticking around unless a) someone is traded or b) the Leafs plan on carrying 8 defenceman, neither of which are likely in my opinion. They might just want an extra defenceman in camp though for logistical purposes.

My guess is guys like Lashoff, Crabb, Rosehill, etc are really just extra bodies for the back-to-back with Detroit that closes the pre-season. I figured they'd keep a couple extra defencemen around for that.

I just think that they're more likely to carry an extra 2 forwards than they are are carry an extra two defencemen. Especially if Brown and Lombardi are both ready to go.

I'd replace Boyce with Gardiner, since I don't want him up to be rotated in and out of the pressbox, but that rest sound about right.

Of these defensemen, is Komi playing the worst?

Keith Aulie
Cody Franson
Jake Gardiner
Carl Gunnarsson
Mike Komisarek
Matt Lashoff
John-Michael Liles
Dion Phaneuf
Luke Schenn

Yup, that's what I'm thinking too. One of Boyce or Dupuis and Orr in the pressbox along with a defenceman.

Greg McKegg has been returned to the Erie Otters, and Rynnas was assigned to Marlies back on Thursday. #Leafs

McKegg was actually with Erie last night, scored a goal and an assist.

I'm a little disappointed in Caputi.

He's coming off almost an entire missed season, so that could be playing a part right now. It's pretty clear this season is make or break for him though, so he has to impress in the AHL if he wants another contract.

He was awful last night imo.  Chasing all the time and unable to win battles.

I haven't really noticed Lashoff.

Aulie has made some mistakes, but I'm sure he will stick.

So Finger doesn't need to clear waivers?

Which of these guys are waiver excempt?

Hmm, any chance anyone takes a chance on Caputi?

Unlikely. Just about every team has a player in a similar situation to Caputi. I doubt anyone sees him as an upgrade on what they have right now.

Kadri has just one assist in four preseason games, while Frattin has tallied two goals and two assists. Said Burke of Kadri, "He's dangerous with the puck, sometimes for the wrong team. We're still seeing too many turnovers high in the attacking zone, but he's definitely improved and does some good things."

From that, they're not 100% sold on Kadri yet.

I wonder if some trade action may be about to happen? Wouldn't put it past Burke although Kadri is his pick so the stubborn factor may kick in....

The interesting question for me is, if Lombardi is actually as close as it seems, what impact does that have on the whole 3rd line winger issue?  Do both Kadri and Frattin start in the A?

As for the D, I gotta think Gardiner starts with the Marlies.  A training camp like he's had is a terrific thing, but the smart thing given the depth of the NHL capable D is to give him big minutes on the farm adjusting to the pro game.  It also gives management time to find a worthwhile trade if that's the path they choose to take, rather than make a snap deal now and then have it backfire if Gardiner/Franson/whoever struggles.
