Training Camp Thread

Clarkson earned himself a 10-game regular season suspension for jumping the bench during a melee, in a pre-season game last year against the Sabres.

Now, this.  It's always something with this guy.

I personally think Clarkson took too much criticism for his opening suspension last year. I didn't see why the attempt at protecting a player from a full on goon gone wild at your own detriment deserved such ridicule, but that's just me. Perhaps I personally played hockey at a time where these things were more cut and dry.

Anyway, I hope he can get out with a full cage as soon as possible. I still think he, Holland and Komorov could make one heck of a good 3rd line.

Because he was suspended for 10 games. Its not rocket science.

Just because things used to be done a certain way doesn't mean that way was smart or that it was the right way. On top of that, by the time Clarkson hopped over the bench in that game, the situation on the ice was already well in hand. There was no protecting that needed to be done at that point. This was hardly "a full on goon gone wild" situation. The officials and the players on the ice did a perfectly good job of diffusing the situation without anyone getting hurt - which is what happens in the vast majority of these situations.  He made a stupid decision knowing that there was a 10 game suspension attached to it, and, for that, he deserves all the criticism levied at him for it.

What happens to guy who gets injured on a PTO. Does he get any sort of medical pay?

They said Leafs were footing his medical bill.

Does he receive anything from the NHL penision stuff if he does not play again? Sorry if this a stupid question a head of time.

If he retires and meets the minimum 400 games played then yes, he is eligible for the NHL pension in the future.

Tallinder now off the Calendar, Booth gets a Baby Ruth, Clarkson parks in Clarkson, Franson is no longer handsome.  And other such nonsense. Lets start the season, I am already bored.

Just spotted Randy outside the Westin at Blue Mountain, he got off a motor coach by himself as we were passing the hotel.  Pulled up and asked him for photo with my wife. He smiled and complied and was a genuinely nice guy. Took a great pick now making the rounds on Facebook and wished Randy a great season.
This is going to make it a lot harder to fire him later in the season?.naw no its not!!!

Very nice encounter. :)  But remember, being a genuinely) nice, decent person has nothing to do with coaching abilities.  There are so many factors involved.

I hope Robidas on the top-pairing is just a pre-season thing. Franson's injury gives the team the opportunity to put Phaneuf back on the right side for a little while, which bumps Robidas to the 2nd pairing. He should probably at least start the season there since he's bound to be a little rusty.

Gardiner-Phaneuf
Rielly-Robidas
Percy-Polak

Given that Phaneuf played 26 minutes last game, is pairing Robidas with him a great idea?  Maybe they move the pairings around a bit and just want to see how he works with Dion, but my concern would be too much, too fast. He's not 25 years old anymore AND he's coming off two significant leg injuries.

I imagine the 26 minutes Phaneuf played against Detroit is a bit of an aberration, and a result of the extreme amount of special teams time in the game and Carlyle not wanting to use Percy and Holzer as much.
