Training Camp Thread

Thanks C, which guys do you consider worth following?

James Mirtle (@mirtle) and Jonas Siegel (@jonasTSN1050) would generally have everything covered. Paul Hendrick (@HennyTweets) is usually reporting line combos.

it was reported that Bozak lost a pinkie finger in a 450 lb sharks mouth while trying to save Kessels ass when he yelled "I think were going to need a bigger boat".

Heh. Remember earlier in the offseason when it was said that the marlie prospects would have a fighting chance to make the squad? There's even less hope this season than last.

while I like the additions of Komarov (love it), Santorelli (Big like), Konteolla (sorry for spelling but he could be a surprise), Winnek (like), Frattin (Love it and be great Matt), Booth (could grow to love it), I think these guys are a fill in for one/two years where Leivo, Nylander, Brown and the other mature in the AHL and get ready for the transition. We are buying ourselves time with a decent squad until we take the next step that Burke started with filling he cupboard with prospects.

Carlyle talks a little bit about the potential line-up here:

http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=731001&navid=DL|TOR|home

-Says they like Santorelli on the wing so he'll likely play there leaving Kontiola and Holland to battle for the 3/4 centre spots
-Clarkson won't be given the 2nd line RW spot but Carlyle hopes his play in training camp is good enough to earn it
-Says Phaneuf and Polak could form a minute-munching top defense pair

It doesn't seem like too many people are considering Winnik as 4th line C.  Is he more likely to be a winger for some reason?  I figure he'd center the 4th line with Komarov on one side to form 2/3rds of the shutdown line.  (Not sure who the 3rd would be.)

He gets called a centre at times but he's generally played wing the last few years. His faceoff numbers are pretty bad too.

They had better let Holland make the team. He should be higher on the depth chart than Clarkson. I don't like the way they are playing up Clarkson in the media.

First session practice includes lines include JVR-Kadri-Frattin, and Kontiola-Nylander-Kessel.  Remember, it's just the first day.  #Leafs

Can we fire Bozak into the sun please?

Leafs signed Cody Donaghey to a 3-year ELC today:

http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=731121&navid=DL|TOR|home

Donaghey's an 18-year old who went undrafted in June. He was invited to the Leafs rookie camp and obviously impressed enough to earn a contract.

This is what HockeyProspectus wrote about him in their draft guide:

And from Future Considerations:

An offensive-minded blueliner who is best when moving the puck up ice with a good first pass. Skates very well and although he does not blow by people regularly, he is more of a smooth skater who pivots and transitions well moving fluidly around the ice. Handles the puck with skilled hands, showing some solid creativity and the ability to protect it while gaining the offensive zone. Lacks poise in his own zone as he is prone to making the odd brutal turnover by not being hard enough clearing the puck from danger in his own zone.

Open TSN.ca, first video has description of: "A day after opening up camp with a media frenzy, all eyes were still on Phil Kessel and his fitness as players underwent on-ice testing."

Closes TSN.ca.

How many 30+ goal seasons does he need before this isn't brought up every training camp?

How many seasons does he have left in him? At least double that.

Hmmm...  Ok, thanks CTB.  I figured there must be a reason.

I'm guessing a couple of winning ones would do the trick.

Reports from camp suggest Granberg is pissing a lot of people off with his play, specifically Lupul and Orr.

Seems he is determined to play with the Leafs this season.

I think it's great that Clarkson is hurt.  Hopefully it will keep him out of the lineup for some time.  I'm surprised he hasn't been DFA'ed already.  He's such a waste of a good roster spot.
