Training Camp Thread

I think it's great that Clarkson is hurt.  Hopefully it will keep him out of the lineup for some time.  I'm surprised he hasn't been DFA'ed already.  He's such a waste of a good roster spot.

You can't DFA players in the NHL. That's a MLB only thing. As for demoting him to the AHL, that pesky little NMC he has kind of stands in the way.

So can they waive him then?  Buy him out?  Cut him loose completely?  I'm sure you have told me this before but I don't remember, sorry.

Can't waive him without his permission. The buyout window is long over (and his contract is structured in a way that makes a buyout prohibitive). The only way they can cut him loose is if he violates the terms of his contract, and, well, I imagine he's smart enough to avoid that.

If that's the case then Nonis should be fired.

If the team doesn't show some serious signs of improvement this season, there's a good chance he will be. That being said, I wouldn't fire someone because of one bad decision.

He did overpay Phaneuf as well.

I really don't think that what's happened since then bears that out. There's a fair argument to make that investing a lot in Phaneuf isn't best for the team but the idea that Phaneuf got a contract that's significantly out of step with what the future salary structure of the league is going to be doesn't really seem to be the case.

What about letting Clarke MacArthur go for nothing?

Well, it's not like they were going to trade him during a playoff run and it's not his fault the coach totally destroyed the relationship there. MacArthur was pretty vocal about not wanting to play for Carlyle again, and Carlyle wasn't going to be fired right after getting the Leafs to the playoffs for the first time in years.

Even if you want to argue that it was a mistake(and I don't think it was as Raymond replaced his production for a third of the cost) it's really just an extension of the Clarkson decision. MacArthur had limited value outside of the team's top 6 and with Clarkson on board there really wasn't a spot in the top 6 available.

First session practice includes lines include JVR-Kadri-Frattin, and Kontiola-Nylander-Kessel.  Remember, it's just the first day.  #Leafs

Can we fire Bozak into the sun please?

C'mon man, Bozie isn't that bad.  :)

I think Clarkson is suited to 'dump-and-chase' hockey.  Toronto is more of a 'try-to-carry-it-in-and-have-a-turnover'.

Should be like the NFL... heres your hot new contract.... if your suck I release you... put up or shut up

http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/2014/09/20/maple_leafs_changing_things_up_defensively.html

From the article:
?There are a couple of changes, a couple of things that are different from last year, but nothing we haven?t seen before,? Leafs winger Joffrey Lupul said.
?I?d say last year was something we hadn?t seen, but this is more of what you grew up with, it takes more of the second-guessing out of it.?
Lupul, a winger, continued: ?We?re more responsible for the point . . . last year we collapsed down low and gave up the pass to the point. Last year there were more pucks to the point (by the opposition) and shots on our net, but you have to execute no matter what system is there, and we didn?t do a good job of that last year. It comes down to those one-on-one battles and you have to win them.?

Sounds like none of the players really understood the system well. I think that makes a lot of sense: It takes a long time to execute something in a world class manner, to dump it on them without any experience on it and to expect the team to execute well is a little odd to me. But beyond that it sounds like the system and possibly the coaching of that system were very confusing.

makes more sense to cover the points, when the other teams wingers go to dish it back to their D man for a  boomer, there will be a Leaf Winger their to stop the opportunity, should cut our goals against way down. Keep it simple stupid was always a good axiom.
I wanna see more of JVR, Kadri and Frattin together?could have two great scoring lines this year

LeafsPR: #Leafs trim training camp roster by 10 players. Roster now stands at 54 players (32 forwards, 16 defencemen and six goaltenders). #TMLtalk

markhmasters: Della Rovere, Findlay, Machacek, R Rupert, Wathier, Watling & Finn assigned to AHL Marlies

markhmasters: Matt Rupert (London), Carter Verhaeghe (Niagara) & Cody Donaghey (Quebec) reassigned to junior clubs

No surprises there.
