The problem, I guess, is that with a bunch of teams looking to clear salary to make next year's cap work I'd bet that it's going to be something of a buyer's market in terms of guys like Komisarek.

You're probably right about that. We're dropping what? 6 million and change next season for the max?

But for teams trying to hit the floor (Isles) he is appealing.  Isles have two expensive UFA d-men coming up in Visnovski and Streit.  They need to fill those voids somehow.

Send him to the Isles for Tim Thomas.

It would be interesting to know what other teams think of Komisarek.
I don't think any team on the planet would want this guy at his salary. If he gets bought out I'm sure someone would take him at a substantially lower salary.

Even if this guy plays like an all-star for the Leafs I have already written him off. There is no way he ever gets back on my depth chart. It is time to move on and forget that he ever played for the Leafs.

I thought amnestying Komi this summer is a foregone conclusion?

Like.... the paperwork is already signed, sealed and just waiting to be delivered.

At this point, unless another team wants to trade for him, yeah, pretty much.

It was to me, until I read that he's paid far less in cash than his cap hit is for next year, which seems to get teams like the Islanders all excited due to their cheap-wad'iness.

So there's a chance some team might come calling... maybe at the deadline.  Then again, with all things considered for the Leafs this year I think they are better off keeping him around as the 8th d-man and making the move in the summer.  You never know what can happen in this short season and *cough*playoffs*cough*

It's not really far less. He'll be paid $3.5M in real dollars for a cap hit of $4.5M.

Seems to me that the euphoria of the four-game winning streak is causing some irrationality.  I've seen calls to trade Gunnarson and Komisarek today, and Liles is somewhere in that mix, too.  Yes, Kostka, Holzer, and Fraser are playing well.  But call me crazy but I think it would be prudent to hold on to some of the established talent (and, yes, contrary to some posts Komisarek is talented and can still contribute) before I hand the keys to the kingdom to these guys, good-news stories notwithstanding.

Hey... a million is a million when you are the Islanders trying to circumvent the cap floor.

Combing the Lupul thread (where does MacArthur fit), teams without a lot of finances and this post how about:

*****  '85 MacArthur, '85 Phaneuf and '85 Kostka for '85 Shea Weber and his $14 MIL salary?

Nashville upgrades their 2nd line scoring, gets a solid #2 dman and a low cost depth dman.

Toronto gets a #1 dman and laughs at the $14 MIL annual salary that is hurting Nashville currently.

Leafs line up would be something like:

JVR / Bozak / Kessel

Lupul / Grabovski / Kulemin

Frattin / Kadri / Komarov

Brown (McLaren) / McClement / Orr

Liles / Weber

Gunnarsson (Gardiner) / Holzer

Fraser / Franson

Komisarek (who gets bought out this summer)

I'm fairly certain the provision from the RFA matching was they can't trade him for the first year, no?

That is correct.

Oh.  I didn't realize that.  Well so much for the Leafs (Nonis) flexing some financial muscle for the Leafs advantage.

I actually don't have much issue with how Phaneuf is playing this year.  He still lacks some hockey IQ that other top pairing dmen have around the league but he isn't atrocious.  I just shiver at the prospect that some might feel he is in line for a raise.

If Phaneuf could be signed to a 8 year $6 MIL contract (8, 8, 8, 6, 6, 4, 4, 4) or a 8 year $6.5 MIL contract (8, 8, 8, 8, 6, 6, 4, 4)it would allow the team to invest in one other top dman possibly.

So if Nonis buys out Komisarek and frees up $4.5 plus take MacArthur's $3.25, letting him walk as UFA, he's in a very nice position to make a giant offer to a certain Ducks centre or winger, and still have about $14 mil more to spend.

The amnesty buyout on Komisarek is a no brainer.

I think if you're going to let MacArthur walk, you trade him for prospects/picks at the deadline.

Heard a little interesting tidbit from the radio yesterday.

Shawn Simpson is now on the Team1200 all the time.  He was a former Maple Leafs scout during the JFJ years.  He is extremely candid and throws out some random Leaf nuggets from his tenure there.

Anyways, he jokes about why he's on the radio now.  Said he was a big proponent of the Rask for Raycroft deal.  Well yesterday they were discussing how good and surprising the NJ Devils are this year and once again he threw out an interesting piece.  And I'm paraphrashing here, 'Clarkson is another reason why I'm on radio now.... when I was part of the Leafs organization and we traded Ken Klee to NJ, the Leafs got to pick from Suglobov or Clarkson and I chose Suglobov.'

Dang.  Nothing earth shattering but thought it was worth sharing.

Is it bad to admit I actually thought of this after Reimer's injury?

.................... I need to lie down.  Anyone wiling to admit they had a hand in the Rask for Raycroft deal is either brave or insane.  Considering the deal... he's insane.

@SSimpsonHockey  if you would like to send any hate mail.

Meh, it's easy to pick apart after the fact because hindsight is 20/20.  Nobody knew at the time that Rask would develop into a starting goalie.  He could have went the way of Pogge.  That's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

Edit: can I use any more tired cliches?  LOL

Its obvious when he couldnt put it together in the AHL. Besides, Raycroft was.coming off one good year and one terrible year. You don't bank on him returning to form by buying high and trading your best prospect. I knew.from the time Bettman announced the trade that the team made an awful mistake, and were still paying for it because we put all our eggs in one basket.
