If they have 12 million plus whatever they ship out, they really should be after Parise and or Suter.

I think he will put in a bid, however Burke doesn't think that he will be in on them. He's probably right.

They should be, hard to say what it'll take or who's interested in playing where but the Leafs would have to ship out a lot of dough to do it and fill out the roster. It could work but a lot of things would have to go right.

"NHL and NHLPA just announced 2012-13 salary cap floor and ceiling: $54.2 million at the bottom and $70.2 million at the top."

So there's your number to use.

It's funny but even with several of these oversized contracts, the Leafs still have $12 mil to spend.

The Rangers have $19 mil to spend to fill 7 roster spots.  This frightens me.

Nobody in hockey is expecting those numbers to actually be in effect when the season starts. The CBA will definitely change that.

The floor will change I think, but Burke himself has said they've been instructed to operate on a business as usual basis, one would think that applies at least in part to the cap too.

That may be but if they're being told to operate on a 'business as usual' basis there must be some kind of mechanism in mind for balancing out the change if teams spend to the current cap. I don't know what it might be but it seems odd otherwise.

It's possible. I'll be interested to see how many teams get their caps that high.

They've been told to operate on a business as usual basis in terms of making deals, signing UFAs, etc, but, they've also been told not to expect any kind of amnesty buyout or anything like that (not that it won't happen, but, it's not a guarantee), so, you can be sure most teams will not be taking the floor number all that seriously and that they'll give themselves a few million in wiggle room against the ceiling.

That's how I see it also. You can't work on the basis of an unknown potential change.

That'll be a bit of tell for sure. The Leafs could really use a break there.

Crabb's agent indicating he won't be a Leaf next season.

That doesn't surprise me at all, he played himself out of contention in Toronto ( meaning he played well and will be too pricey as an ufa )

Aaron Asham is a UFA?

*updates hopeful list*

Seriously. If they are looking to add toughness and not add complete uselessness other than scrapping, Asham would be a good choice. Underrated player, IMO.

I'd like him too, but he's signing with the Rangers. Just how the universe works.

If you miss out on Prust, Asham or Konopka would be considered.

Konopka is a poor mans Steckel... which is not a compliment.

Really? I just don't see that. Konopka has more fights in the last 3 years than anyone in the league. He is known as a good leadership guy in the changeroom. Except for the face-off skill I don't get the parallel.

I reeeeeeeeeeealllly wish Burke would let his stubborn stance on extended contracts slide for Parise.  Actually for Suter too but I"m starting with Parise.

Burke could offer this and not completely compromise his stance against "cap circumvention contracts"

10 years, $71 million, broken down like this:

12.5
12.5
8
6
6
6
6
5
5
4

$7.1 mil cap hit.  Takes Parise to 37 years old.

Hell he could throw the same contract at Suter and see what happens.

Figure out the cap logistics later.

I think that for the leafs right now, signing 3rd, 4th line forwards at inflated UFA prices (UFA prices are always inflated relative to contracts given to non-UFAs) is just a waste of money. We have enough mediocre players.  In fact, we just bought one out.
