I'm thinking Lombardi is a big sleeper that will slide right into the top six. I also think Kulemin does the rubber biskit. I also think it will be a war for jobs this season with all the talent we have up front.

I love you nutman.

Gardiner's defensive abilities lie in his poise with the puck, his ability to skate it out of danger and make a good first pass to get out of the zone. Man to man without the puck, he's probably average. If he gets into a physical battle he will probably lose, but his skating ability allows him to keep opponents from getting position on him. He's also pretty nifty with the stick. I think he can hold his own, as long as he is kept away from the more physical power forwards in the league.

I agree with this. There will be a war over jobs in the Maple Leafs top 6 sort of in the same way that England and Argentina once fought a war over some islands populated by a couple dozen sheep.

Let me take a crack at it.

Top six, to start the season (barring no further trades), in no particular order...

Kessel
Lupul
van Reimsdyk
MacCarthur
Grabovski
Kulemin

I'm going to throw the old competition wrench in your list and counter with:

JVR is going to be a disaster at C because he doesn't play there and doesn't take faceoffs.  So I think he ends up back on the wing and we see him either drop all the way to the 3rd line or Kulemin drops to the 3rd.

I think its come to the point where Burke changes his stance and goes Top 9 with a fourth line.  As of today my top 9 would be
Lupul/Bozak/Kessel
JVR/Grabovski/Kulemin
MacArthur/Connelly/Frattin
Seems I read on here before that Connelly and MacArthur have been friends for a long time so maybe some chemistry. I know that first line showed some and JVR im sure will like playing with the hustling russians.
Who knows?

He took faceoffs and played a C all throught college.  When he was taken 2nd overall it was based on his work at center.  I think he will do pretty well there.  Sure he has room to grow but compare him to our other centers.

I also would have expected that to be the top 9 until McClement got signed.  Now  I am wondering if Carlyle will blow up the lines and do something like this:

JVR/Grabovski/Kessel
MacArthur/Connolly/Lupul
Frattin/McClement/Kulemin
Brown/Steckel/Komarov

(Bozak and Lombardi might be traded in a package for a goalie in Vancouver...)

Does anyone think Kadri has more to offer than Connolly as one of the top three centers?

I think Kadri should have an extended look in the NHL. I wasn't fore the two year deal we gave Connolly from the start, but conceded that that was the only way it got done at all last year.

If Kadri can play defensively enough, play him.  And let him loose in the offensive zone.  I think Wilson hated when he tried fancy moves.

With McClement and Steckel I think Kadri would have to be one of the top 2 centers on the Leafs.

As a winger I don't see Kadri on the top 2 lines either.  That's why I see him as trade fodder.

JVR helps in the size department but nothing has really been done to improve team - and especially Top 6 - toughness.

I am concerned about the as well.  It is almost as bad as the skill combinations on defense.

I'm pretty convinced that Kadri won't be a center in the NHL, he'll play the wing. As far as where he should play, it's definitely in a top 6 role, not a checking line role.
