What to do with JVR

I'm actually OK with them bringing in Nash, assuming Bozak, Komarov, and JvR are gone. We need someone to play.

I think it reeks of an old school thinking move similar to the David Clarkson signing.

Rick Nash did not look good during the series.  Adding a player that did not look good during the series to an existing cast of players that did not look good during the series will not result in an improvement.

I disagree about Nash not looking good. I thought his size really gave our defence difficulties. He didn't score but I think he had a lot of pressure while he was out there. I think he'd be an upgrade on Hyman alongside Matthews.

You just have to realize that he's turning 34 years old and isn't a legitimate 1st line winger anymore so his contract has to reflect that. I wouldn't give him 6x6 or anything but a 3 year deal at $5mil? I'd think about it. I really have no idea what other teams will be offering him though, and Nash's history suggests that he wouldn't be very interested in playing in Toronto anyway.

I have never seen such a big, strong guy fall so much getting run into by small players. Nylander runs into him and he falls trying to draw a penalty, Bozak hits him and he falls, draws and penalty and like a moron gets up and cross checks him in the face, negating the power play in a (still) close game. I think his best days are way past him and I agree Carlton I don't think he has any desire to play in TO.

I'd be selling my Toronto house if I was JVR.

I think what's more interesting is what they're going to do down the middle this summer...2 holes to fill there.

And even if you promote Johnsson to a regular role, which is pretty likely, there's still a hole on the 4th line wing that I can't imagine Leivo is going to fill.  I feel like Grundstrom is going to get a year with the Marlies.

I can't imagine they bring Polak back, given everyone including my mother knows they need an upgrade at RHD.

Interesting summer...

Interesting summer indeed. There's a few holes to fill and I don't think there are really any Marlies ready to step up (I'm not including Johnsson or Kapanen who are legit NHLers.)

Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Marner - Tavares - Brown
Kapanen - Kadri - Marleau
Johnsson - Someone - Someone

I think they need two defensemen though to bolster the lineup.  Polak needs to be replaced and realistically I think we need to find an upgrade in the top 6.  Expecting Gardiner to bounce back to his 2015 season and for Dermott to progress is something I think the Leafs need to stop waiting for.  I think next year is a season where the expectations for the team is to go on a legitimate playoff run and not just make the playoffs.

You can add Josh Leivo to that list IMO.  Then there is only one hole to fill.  I think next season is exactly why the Leafs signed him to another year.

I know it's easy to look back now, but man, would it have been great if the Leafs had traded JVR, Bozak, and Komarov and then tried to run the gamut with their remaining pieces.  Forget trading for Plekanec.  Just load up on some more picks and see what happens.  By not doing that they have lowered their ceiling somewhat in terms of what this team could eventually do.

It's easy to say that now and they really were oh so close to beating Boston.  But I remember at the time I had wished the Leafs had either gone for it or else do what I just mentioned above.  Actually what could have proven to be the best move was to do absolutely nothing.  The team played quite well down the stretch.  Maybe trade JVR if the right offer comes along.  I guess no one blew Lamoriello away with an offer.

I think if Leivo had a spot on the Leafs we'd have seen him a lot more than we did.

The other side of the coin is that if they wanted rid of him so badly he would be gone already. Lamoriello can make people disappear LOL. I'm thinking now that there are a couple of open forward slots next season, at the very least they will let Josh Leivo compete for the job.

If he was a strong 5v5 player there wouldn't be a question. I think the term and money will be to big for the Leafs. Someone is going to pay him large..

I didn't resurrect the thread because I thought what they should do with JvR is a question now. They're obviously not re-signing him this summer.

So game 7 collapse against Boston, after a gutsy comeback try, and the collapse was predicted by stats that showed the Leafs were playing over their heads?

Did I fall through a portal to 2013?

They better not go out and throw money at Rick Nash because "he brings the element they need".  I hope they don't go in to the offseason thinking they are closer than they are.

No, the Leafs did.  I almost thought the year was 2013.

Nash?  I agree, no.

Can we trade the rights to negotiate for him before a certain date or anything? I'd do that.
