What’s interesting is how harshly people are judging said season with some exaggerated comparisons to a third-line center.

I haven't seen that anywhere
There's a general acknowledgement that he has not been the player we saw last season due to injury.
His career ppg is 1.15 which matches his ppg for this season.
His shooting is off and skating is off, etc but not that far off - not 3rd line center off.
During the deadline, I was having trouble finding available 3rd line centers who scored .5ppg and won 50% of their faceoffs. Matthews 1.15ppg and 57% faceoff win% is a little bit above that ...

I have no idea what's been going on with him but he looked a lot more like his old self last night. I don't put too much stock in the Calgary game as they pretty much suck, but he more than held his own against one of the best players in the league last night. Fingers crossed that it continues. Now the other lines, not feeling so good about those right now...
