What's wrong with Schenn?

Schenn needs over 20 minutes a game.  He needs to feel like the guy!  When he plays his best is when they lean on him like last year.  Playing limited minutes hurts him in big way!!!

Having said that, to date, I do not regret Gardiner being on this roster. But at times, he has left his partner high and dry and sometimes, his partner is the one taking the media hit for it.

Completely agree with you.  Komisarek at some point was put with Liles on a steadier basis and he hasn't looked better.  When he was with Gardniner he was all over the place.

But still, on his own Schenn is doing some crazy things this year... with the puck he is giving it the grenade treatment, hesitating nearly every time he touches it.

I do think at some point they need to send Gardiner down, put Franson back in on his natural side and let things settle in.  They are enamored with Gardiner's speed and puck savvy but its high risk stuff that could use some seasoning.

put it this way.. if Gardiner was a veteran coming in, he would already be getting the Tom Kurvers treatment.

Schenn is definitely guilty of some grenade tossing where Gardiner or Liles were not at fault.

A part of his game that has bugged me recently is when he ventures in deep into the offensive zone. He's a bigger risk doing that because he's not quick enough to get back in a timely way. And he's not so good offensively that it makes a big enough difference to warrant the risk right now. I'd encourage him to focus on keeping the puck out of the Leafs net unless the clock is ticking down and they need a goal. Once that is in better order, he can revisit his offence.

Schenn just needs to keep things simple, and not try to do everything, but play a simple game of eliminating and shutting down opposing forwards.

Maybe Wilson's system requires him getting more involved down low? I know Dion's been doing it, but it that just Dion's game, or is that the system? If it's the system, then Luke simply may not be capable of playing it, given his footspeed.

We've seen Schenn play the system well. While his footspeed my be lacking this season, I still believe the problem is between the ears. Hopefully, as he said in his pregame today, his game bounces back and he helps the team win, like we know he can.

Luke needs to get that fire back and start being the guy that locks down the defensive zone and in front of the net. He's more than capable.

He got some advice from Komisarek to keep it simple.  And honestly, both those guys need to keep their games simple.

I have to agree with Kypreos from last night too. Schenn is making mistakes that have nothing to do with his foot speed. On the one goal, what on earth was he doing in a stick battle for the puck? Take out the man and there's no goal.

I'm surprised that this team doesn't do a better job of playing the body.

I only saw about 1/2 the game yesterday, but Schenn looked like a completely different player to me - he was fast, he was beating players to the puck, he was setting up chances, taking shots, hitting..

Yeah, since he was sat out that one game he's been much, much better. He looks like the Schenn we signed to that 5 year deal.

I agree.  He also looked very good in the Ottawa game.  Fingers crossed that he might be finally starting to come around...

Who has the reset button for the man with the reset button?

He is not a quality defenseman and never will be.  I commented before the season started on Schenn's abilities and what I have seen so far this year, I wasn't smokin' anything back then as assumed by many.  I am reposting those comments below:

The defenseman that I think is totally over-rated is Schenn.  The only thing going for him as a 1st rounder was that he matured much faster (body wise) at an earlier age than other players his age.  Rest assure you the Leafs scouts did another bang up job but then again that does not say much for Leafs scouting either but the then again look at the last 20 years and it has been slim pick'ins for the Leafs).

I want to throw a brick at the TV screen when I see him out there killing pentalies, holding his stick up high with two hands, waving it back and forth, looks like something a mite or squirt would do.  I want to scream when he falls down and lunges his stick at the forward who just dippsy doodled around him at the blue line.  I want to turn off the TV when he takes a weak wrist shot from the point as he as yet to learn how to take a slap shot, or at least one that is of NHL calibre.  I hate to turn the TV on as I might see the opposing team scoring as he has his man is unattended and open and in most cases, behind him.

The only thing he has going for him is that he was a 1st round draft choice and both management and fans still want to believe he will become a 1st line defenseman, or that matter a quality NHL defenseman.  My opinion is that he would be lucky to be a 6th defenseman on any other NHL team. The press and Leafs brass continue to build this guy up but he has yet to show me anything that would lead me to believe he should be anything but a 7th or 8th defenseman.
