They were almost forced to, maybe Barrie will be used differently now, so we can trade him for more.
Stop trading guys away. Barrie was not used properly.
Well, I don't want a one-way d-man at an expensive contract next season.

I'm curious what happens with McFarland and Hakstol - since both of them are in the first years of their assistant coaching jobs...

There is a lot more to this than meets the eye, inside stuff, dressing room conversations between Tavares, Rielly, Matthews let Dubas know Bab's had lost the room,  I would think.

Is this where we find out that the AHL is different than the NHL?
Coaching is coaching. Systems can work in both leagues. Obviously the Leafs brass feel the team is good enough and Babs was the issue.

Let Keefe hire his staff and now.  Hakstol was the thing that got Babs fired so soon.  Hope Dubas didn't hire him.

Did anyone notice the Leafs play any different with these new guys? I didn't. PP looks the same. Obviously Babs was still calling the shots. They'll stay for now.

Great decision. Should have happened in the summer.  The NHL has passed up Babcock and it was time to go.

Leafs in much better hands now.

There were differences in opinion on how things work.  I'm not happy that Babcock didn't work out.  I don't think the performance against Vegas was the cause of his release.

They invested 50 million dollars in the core forwards of this team.  The rest of the roster is going to be put together through creativity because of that.  If the coach and GM have different philosophies it just isn't going to work out.

I wish Babcock had more success here.  I think he did some important things and it will be interesting to see how Keefe handles the rest of the changes.

Wouldn't have been my plan.

You're now on the clock Dubas.

Babcock needed to go but Dubas bears quite a bit of responsibility for this mess.
It's only a mess if they fail from here on out. Babs was never Dubas' choice.

I was always in the "it's not the coaches fault" camp. That being said, something had to be done. It's all on the players now.

I also think it's great they've hired Dallas Eakins to take his spot.

They need to go too.  Unless Keefe is just an interim coach.

Keefe isn't interim. He's been hired as the head coach.

Barring bigger moves I don't think it's all that uncommon to keep some of the assistants at least for this year and then make bigger changes next year.

Keefe was always going to be Dubas' coach at some point.  Unless the team flounders and then they decide to rashly clean house I don't expect him to be an interim coach.

I think that this is ultimately a clash between different ideas between Babcock and Dubas. I don't think they were on the same page, and one of them had to go. All the best to Mike wherever he goes.
