Zach Hyman Suspended 2 Games

I think Lucic's is worse, but let's just assume they're equal. If you go back to the discussion between Nik and I, I think we agree that this type of hit is what needs to be out of the game. Ignore what the letter of the rules say: what's the intent here? Lucic is fully intending on laying out as much damage as possible.

Honestly, I think Hyman's hit was worse - partly because it starts with him coming from behind, and also because it was more of a late hit. Hamonic had just dished out the pass when he was hit, not really giving Lucic enough time to avoid contact (though, he didn't have to hit him as hard as he did, obviously - that was unnecessary, and probably should have tipped the scales in favour of an interference call). Hyman had more than enough time to decide not to hit McAvoy.

It's a blindside hit, and, like Bullfrog, I'd like to see the league do something about them, but, I don't think it's a more worthy of a suspension with the current rules.
 
Good point, Busta, about the lateness of Hyman's hit. Hyman definitely had time to avoid the hit and deliberately chose to make it. To me though, this is where the timing is less significant: Lucic clearly made up his mind to make a huge hit with plenty of time to avoid it. So whether it's 0.6 or 0.8 seconds is somewhat irrelevant to me (outside the context of the rules.)

Seems fair to me.  I agree with bullfrog and others that these hits need to go.

OTOH Wagner went after our best defenseman right after.  It was obvious retaliation and that needs to go too.  I think an equal suspension there would signal that the refs are supposed to mete out the justice, not The Code or whatever.
 
If you think about it, this decision showing that the league has an inconsistent standard does sort of fit to the pattern of the league having an inconsistent standard which makes it sort of a consistent standard.

That's the one I have a problem with. I think the sort of late, unsuspecting hit Hyman delivered is bad for the game and needs to be eliminated from the game so I'm fine with his suspension; but the deliberate intent-to-injure sort of hit that Wagner tried on Morgan shortly thereafter is (IMO) even worse. That's the sort of predatory attack that could end a career so I find it really disappointing that they turned a blind eye to it.

They're consistent in their inconsistency.

I've looked at the hit a half a dozen times, and I'm still having trouble with seeing it as suspension worthy, but I guess 2 games without Hyman isn't really anything I can all riled up about.

Yeah very stupid.  He was obviously going after Rielly in retaliation of what Hyman did to McAvoy and not even a hearing for it.  Unreal.

I thought a major penalty was sufficient, but I can understand the argument for a suspension: it was a blindside hit and it was late and it didn't have anything to do with the play.

The League knows exactly what they are doing!

The League knows that for every Leaf fan they piss off, there is 50, or more, that will take over buying tickets and merchandise.  This is not so with most of their American franchises.

So, if you want to send a message with a suspension, do it with, and to, a Leaf player.  Just because I will no longer buy Leaf merchandise or tickets means nothing, as there are likely 50, or more people, still willing to do so not matter how unfair their Leafs are treated by the League.

Until our Leafs experience trouble selling tickets and merchandise, the League will not change anything.  The League needs to be totally embarrassed by MLSE.  MLSE has the funds, and clout, to push back against the obvious negative bias shown towards our Leafs.

Also, merchandise isn't really finite and the money is pooled. If one Leafs fan stops buying stuff it means exactly the same thing to the league as one Coyotes fan.

Where is the suspension for the nasty hit against Matthews, delivered by Kronwall?

Where is the suspension for the nasty hit against Marner, delivered by McAvoy?

Where is the suspension for the intent to injure Rielly, delivered by Wagnar?

I guess we should all buy 3 jerseys to reward the NHL for getting it so right.  :P
 
Yes, instead of the very reasonable explanation of the league being inconsistent with discipline in exactly the same way that the league doesn't call penalties consistently it's probably better to assume it's a league wide conspiracy that seeks to unfairly punish its second most valuable franchise for some reason.
