2011-2012 NHL Thread

Pekke Rinne has 100 career wins and 22 career shutouts.  Is that not absurd?

Maybe we should sign him in the summer and deal Reimer for an impact player ala Potvin for Berard?  Hehe

I'm down. Or, if Nashville thinks they can't sign him, send them Reimer, plus, plus.

Edmonton is just rolling.  Up 4-1 on St. Louis now.

Those Oilers are something.  With all that fine young (and fast) talent, who would have known that they would be 'tearing' up the league.  Of course, it's early in the season, yet, but, certainly a significant achievement for such a young team, trying to move on up.

It's Halloween.  The ghouls and goblins are out.  So are these statistic headlines... trick or real??!!

1. The Toronto Maple Leafs are first in the Northeast Division.

2. Marc-Andre Bergeron is first in scoring among defensemen.

3. Nikolai Khabibulin has a league-best GAA of 0.97 and save percentage of .964.
(Note:  Khabibulin had the second worst percentages after Rick DiPietro last season)!

4. The Colorado Avalanche have the league's best powerplay; they're converting at a 30% rate.

5. Mike Ribeiro is the worst faceoff man in the NHL.

Treats, anyone?

November 1st is a significant date according to Elliote Friedman's post awhile back:

Twenty teams who were not in the top eight on Nov. 1 recovered to make the playoffs. That's an average of almost 3.5 per season. (Just to clarify, the "Top 8" includes any team with the same point total as the eighth-place team. I wasn't going into tiebreakers so early in the season.)

Doesn't seem so bad, right? Depends. The safety net shreds for anyone falling too far behind. Of those 20 teams, guess how many of them were more than three points out?

Two. That's it.

...

So, that's something to keep an eye on. If your team is two wins out of the playoffs at the beginning of November, the three-point games give it a seven per cent chance of recovery.

That's pretty tough.

So according to history, three teams are already virtually eliminated from the playoffs less than a month into the season, the Blue Jackets, the Islanders, and ... the Bruins. The Devils, Jets, and Flames are on the brink. Hard to believe the defending Cup champs are in such bad shape already.

To be fair, the Isles, Devils, and Flames have only played 9 games. The math was based on the 10 game mark.

So if Ottawa wins tonight, they go a point ahead of us. However, they're playing Boston and I am enjoying their struggles so.... * GULP * Go Sens go!

They'll have also played 2 more games, so . . .

... guilt free Sens love?

No such thing. Just that, even if they pass the Leafs tonight, it won't take much to put them back where they belong - below the Blue & White.

True... Permission from Leaf Nation for a 1 night working visa to Snottawa then?

Edit: Though I'd need permission from Snottawa but then again, we're Leaf Nation... I think that gives like UN status or something and we don't really need permission for anything.

Denied. The sens win streak has gone on long enough, but, more importantly, the Bruins need to start putting some distance between themselves and Columbus, and possibly pull themselves out of the bottom 5. A mediocre Bruins team is of greater long-term benefit to the Leafs than a bad one is.

EDIT: Also, Boston's next game is against the Leafs, and we both know what happened last time they played with the Bruins desperate for a win.

Apparently Cherry was talking about the Canucks being whiners recently and they didn't take too kindly to it.

Yahoo Sports Article

My favourite part was when Henrik said "He's on TV to get an audience and he's said a few things that were borderline the last couple of weeks.", as if calling the Canucks whiners was somehow equivalent to the whole Grimson / Nilan etc. affair.

If they weren't complainers, they probably would have had a lot more Canadian fans cheering them on. It was one of the major reasons why I did not cheer for them.

MF, SP? ...  I need you guys to help sneak me out tonight... I'm sending you an agent with top secret exit instructions. You'll know who the agent is when he/she utters; "the Redden is good." Repeat; "the Redden is good."
