2011-2012 NHL Thread

They're professional athletes. if you want to call them entertainers, that's fine, but their entertaining is through their sport, not pointing a stick at a goalie and pretending it's a gun. Sure, it's an obvious symbol of "sniping" a goal, but it's not classy at all.

Everyone is entertained by different things. Some people like showmanship with their athletes, some don't. There's no right or wrong to it. Whether or not something is sufficiently "classy" isn't a hard and fast rule. I'm fine with those celebrations, others aren't. I loved Teemu's duck hunting celebration. I liked the choreographed TD dances. I don't think there's a need to take those things seriously.

As a fan? No, no need. As another athlete who just got scored on? Not so cool. And please don't give me the "if he doesn't want to be shot by an imaginary bullet he shouldn't let in goals" reply.

Classy wasn't the right word. But, there's a difference between taunting and celebrating, and it's fairly clear to me.

Net? Okay. Goalie? Not cool. - Just my view.

Sure. Problem there is that pointing at the goalie and pointing at the net are largely indistinguishable from each other if the goalie is in the net.

Personally, I figure a guy can act however he likes if he scores a goal/touchdown/whatever.

It doesn't take a lot to think of gestures that could be obscene. Happy Gilmore comes to mind.

Well, I won't say it but you should know I'm thinking it.

And Anisimov said he was pointing at the net, not a player.

Entertaining or not, it's just classless, and something 95% of the league would never do, and there's a reason for that.

It's just not a part of the culture of hockey, and becoming less and less a part of the culture of pro sports, rightly or wrongly. You are right though, as a fan, who really cares? But having been on the other end of those types of celebrations growing up playing hockey, it's pretty hard to let go. So I can totally understand how grown, adult men, can take offense to childish over-the-top, rub it in type celebrations.

And not only that, he looks like a moron doing that.

Again, to the extent that it was sufficiently "classy" is going to be up to everyone on their own. Part of the culture of hockey? Maybe not but so much of that culture is effin' stupid that it doesn't really sway me much.

Again, I like those celebrations. I don't think everyone will but I don't think there's a right or wrong there.

Looks like Terry Murray may become the next coaching casualty this season:

I hope Murray doesn't read the Times!

Clean check - you get beaten up
Celebrate after a goal - you get beaten up

This game is turning into a joke.

Players celebrate after every goal without being beaten up.

It's not a hockey specific thing - look at the Terrell Owens stuff from a few years back in the NFL.

Clean check - you get suspended
Pitchfork or chicken wing someone without the puck - possible suspension depending on your last name and team you play for

You're obviously referring to Neil's clip on Grabovski, right?

I mean, I guess what goes around comes around, and you shouldn't b@#$* and complain when it does.  :P

The league is heading more and more into the NBA territory of reputation calls. This is prolly as a result of declining quality of refereeing.

Grabovksi - the Shawn Kemp of the NHL

DarrenDreger Darren Dreger
Dean Lombardi scorched the players in a meeting a short while ago. Very upset he had to fire Murray.

Kings fire Murray, name Stevens interim coach

Read a report somewhere today that there was no way the Kings would consider Carlyle as a replacement. Didn't say why. Maybe from their rivalry ..?

Funny, I was just going to suggest that Carlyle could be a good replacement. There seems to be some similarities between his successful Anaheim teams and this LA one.

That's the part I actually disagree with. I thought it was kinda funny and appreciate the pose. I still don't agree with him doing it. To me the difference between a good, entertaining celebration and a taunt is whether you're doing it AT the opponent or not. That's why Selanne's duck shot is hilarious and Anisimov's snipe is iffy.
