2011-2012 Waivers thread

Wasn't Betts the PK guy a bunch here wanted last year?

Yeah. He lead in the Flyers in SHTOI last season. I don't expect the Leafs to make a claim, but I certainly won't be upset if they do.

He's a very, very good PK guy, blocks a ton of shots and husstles quite a bit.  He was great with Sjostrom and Orr on the Rangers 4th line for a while there.

I don't think we claim him either but I do think he would be a nice 4th line center for pretty much any team.

The Flyers are fiddling with their roster trying to fit some players in under their cap. B Schenn is being sent to the AHL and in doing so, they save about half his cap hit if they send him down for a AHL game due to his bonus structure (I don't know the details - just what I read).

The Leafs said they were looking for a prototypical, decent sized 4th line center who could win faceoffs. Betts might be a close as they'll find available. $700 k cap hit. Historically, as folks above said, he's been a good PKer.

Bozak is the only good faceoff guy we've got. Betts would help in that department though he was mediocre at it last season.

I'd be interested if he's fit and healthy. It would mean someone else has to go off our roster though. If he's healthy, I suspect someone will take him though the Flyers may have tried to trade him before waiving him.

kausatoday: Woywitka (Montreal) and MacLean (Phoenix) put on waivers. Betts (Montreal) was the only one claimed today.

I can see someone putting in a claim on MacLean. He has good junior and AHL numbers, though, limited NHL experience so far.

Sean Avery's days with the New York Rangers appear over.

The noted agitator cleared waivers Wednesday and was assigned to the Connecticut Whale of the AHL. The move clears his US$1.93 million from the team's salary cap.

Avery was in the final season of the contract he originally signed with the Dallas Stars. He didn't play in New York's final two exhibition games in Europe, and it became inevitable he would be cut.

Rangers coach John Tortorella said Tuesday the club had better players than Avery. It is not known if the forward will report to the AHL team or try to join a club in Europe.

Shouldn't be happy about someone losing their job so I'll just leave it at: I won't miss him.

Can't wait for Conneticut to visit The Rock.  Redden and Avery on the same team?  I'll boo louder than I have since the Darcy Tucker days.

That is almost 10 million dollars in salary between 2 players, almost 12 million if you count the full salary for Avery and not just what the Rangers have to pay.

$10.5M total between Redden and all of Avery's salary - $8.5M if you take out the portion Dallas has to pay.

Nystrom on waivers in Minnesota

Nystrom finds himself in limbo. He?s a hard-working role player but was too expensive to be a fourth-line centre on a one-way $1.4 million salary this year and next, at least in the Wild?s eyes.

He's had a rough start to the year. He truly seemed broken up about that play which caused the injury to Fedun. I think somebody will pick him up though. He's an effective 4th liner.

One small problem - Nystrom's a winger, not a centre.

I liked him in Calgary. Didn't see him much if at all in Minny (I can't recall seeing him or noticing him). He was a team worst -16 among the Minny forwards last season. Not good for a 4th liner to have that much drag. I think his price tag will be discouraging. If Minny puts him on recall waivers, I think someone would snag him at half price while saving Minny some precious bucks.

New York Rangers' demotion of Sean Avery could force Dallas Stars to acquire a player
http://starsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2011/10/new-york-rangers-demotion-of-sean-avery.html
The Stars have been paying half of Sean Avery's salary to the New York Rangers since losing him on recall waivers in 2009, and that $1.9 million has also counted against the salary cap for the Stars.

However, the Rangers last week assigned Avery to the their minor league team in Connecticut , and the NHL notified the Stars that they could not count Avery's cap hit while he is in the minors, even though they still must pay the salary.

That puts the Stars perilously close to the cap floor.

Adam Pardy is on injured reserve with a rib injury and Philip Larsen has taken his place on the roster, and that has kept the Stars above the floor because both salaries count against the cap.

However, if Pardy recovers from his rib injury -- and he is expected to by Thursday -- a player would have to be assigned to the minors, and the Stars would fall under the floor because they would have 23 players counting against the cap instead of 24.

"It's an issue that we didn't think we would have to deal with, but we do, and we are studying every option," general manager Joe Nieuwendyk said. "Bottom line, you can't be below the floor."

A notable predicament. Financially, the Stars are hurting so this adds insult to injury for the dumb Avery contract.

You'd think there would be some kind of rule preventing another team's moves from dictating the cap numbers of another. I realize that Dallas was the one that signed that ridiculous contract, but it leaves a bit of control in the hands of the Rangers, as far as how much over or under the cap Dallas is. Maybe they should just make it like a buyout and permanently sticky it to the cap number or something, as he's not on their team, so IMO, roster moves involving that player should not affect their cap implications.
