2011-2012 Waivers thread

TSNBobMcKenzie: NYR put Sean Avery on re-entry waivers. Other players on waivers: Trevor Gillies (NYI) and D.J. King (WSH). DET's Brunnstrom clears waivers.

Hopefully, no one claims Avery and the Rangers decide to leave him in the AHL. This could just be one of those situations where the player/agent asked the team to give him a chance to see if there was opportunity elsewhere.

Hope you're right. There were crowds of people chanting "Bring back Avery"...hope the team isn't listening.

I think the Rangers are serious about bringing him back.

Here is something I read from a blog at the NY DailyNews:

IF AVERY?S ON WAIVERS, HE SHOULD BE ON RANGERS
I?m not guaranteeing that no other NHL team will claim Avery if the Rangers place him on re-entry waivers Monday at noon, but I think it?s unlikely, and here?s why:

When the Rangers scooped Avery off re-entry waivers from Dallas in March 2009, they split his salary and cap hit with the Stars. My understanding of the NHL?s collective bargaining agreement is that if another team claimed Avery after the Rangers placed him on re-entry waivers, the Blueshirts would still be on the hook for half of both his salary and cap hit - it?s the Stars who would get Avery off their books.

So if the Rangers, say, wanted to clear money to acquire a defenseman, that CBA language shows that losing Avery through re-entry waivers wouldn?t accomplish that goal. The Rangers wouldn?t gain any salary or cap money, so it seems that point is moot.

Furthermore, if the Rangers wanted to give the rest of the league ample time to decide whether they wanted Avery, they could have placed him on re-entry waivers Sunday, giving NHL opponents 48 hours until Tuesday at noon to enter a claim.

Instead, they are expected to enter the claim on Monday, when the re-entry waiver will take only 24 hours to process, also at noon Tuesday.

Finally, the Rangers knew earlier this fall when they placed Dale Weise on waivers that he would likely be picked up, and he was, by Vancouver. John Tortorella and Glen Sather know the lay of the land here, so I think they already know whether Avery will be picked off or not, and based on the factors, I?m going to say that at 12:01 p.m. Tuesday, Avery again, officially, will be a Ranger.

I trust Pierre more on this.

In the event a team claimed Avery on re-entry waivers, New Team would owe him 25 % of his salary, Rangers 25 % percent, and Stars still 50 %

Yeah, the other guy's "understanding" really just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

That being said, if Avery does join an NHL roster, the team that really stands to benefit, in my opinion, is Dallas. Every day Avery isn't back in the AHL, they get a shade over $10K added to their cap spending, helping them get a little further away from the cap floor.

He could have been had by any team without giving up an asset (unless a team needed to waive someone to make room) and $968k/yr ... in the last year of his deal (1/4 of his salary). 29 teams passed.

Having said that, right now, I suspect he'll help the Rangers.

He's eligible to play for them now. Do you think he actually will because honestly, I really don't know if he was recalled to play or recalled for other reasons.

Mike Rupp has a chronic knee problem - maybe headed for surgery. According to what I'd read, Tortorella was onside with Avery replacing Rupp because he can do many of the things Rupp can.

Having said that, there's been no final decision because the Rangers won last night.

Maybe... I could see the decision going either way, personally.

TSNBobMcKenzie: CGY puts Niklas Hagman on waivers. EDM claims Taylor Chorney from STL and ANA claims Ben Maxwell from WPG.

Hagman on re-entry... I wonder of Anaheim would put in a claim as a replacement for Blake... All fin line - Hagman/Koivu/Selanne

Wouldn't surprise me if someone picks him up. He'll only cost ~$1.2M for the rest of the season, which is perfectly reasonable for a 3rd liner than can fill in on the 2nd from time to time, and he's a UFA at the end of the season.

Yeah, I do kind of see a natural fit there in Anaheim ... Maybe Carolina to join like a dozen other ex-Leafs. Hagman would probably slide ahead of Pony as their #2 LWer there.

Why don't we pick him up?  I think he'd better than Frattin (not that I dislike Frattin, it just seems like he might benefit from time in the AHL).  If he isn't better -- send him back down again.  Perhaps trade him at the deadline.

Partly because he's not the type of 3rd liner the Leafs need - he's not particularly big (though, he not small, either), and he's not particularly physical. On top of that, Frattin is already just a temporary fix until Armstrong and/or Connolly get healthy. On top of that, he'd take up the team's last reserve list spot, which makes any future waiver claims problematic. He also can't be traded this season without being offered back to any other teams putting in a waiver claim on him for free (though, were he to make it all the way to the Leafs, that would mean pretty much no one else put in a claim). As much as I liked Hagman in his time here, he's just not a good fit for the Leafs right now.

That and the last thing we need is yet another winger. We need to hold steadfast and wait for a number one center to become available. That is the answer to almost any acquisition question, regardless of how long we wait for that guy. Unless injuries happen of course, but I can't see a situation where the Leafs burn through all of our players, along with the call-ups we have available to us.
