wow.

The guy had 24 goals last year.  0 points and -6 so far this year, though. :S  I wouldn't take him, but I'm sure somebody might be willing to bite.

Comeau's play was so putrid, he played himself off one of the worst teams in the league. Something people tend to forget #isles

Gotta think someone will take a chance on him....Snow is unraveling...

TSNBobMcKenzie Bob McKenzie
NSH puts Niclas Bergfors on unconditional ($125) waivers. If he clears, team and player can mutually agree to terminate contract

Off to Europe?

This is either a case of a player who has become incredibly distracted by something and the team not liking what they see are giving up on him, or he's simply not going to agree tolick from Garth's poison SNOW cone** anymore.  I think its the latter. He's not the first player to have problems in dysfunction-land.

**You,you see what I did there? you see that?  Snow cone?!?!? Like Lou's Kool Aid only its poison?

I do as well.

They took away his PP time and ice time. Put him on a 3rd line - so a significant drop off was inevitable.

He's second on his team in hits  - so he's probably still trying.

I suspect it's at least partly a coach or management thing though I've haven't seen him play this year. They did bicker over his contract.

If he made it as far as the Leafs, I might take a chance because he's a physical ingredient they could use and he PKs.

Maybe, though, he still carries a fairly significant cap hit for someone who has produced no offence and played himself off of the Islanders. It wouldn't surprise me if teams wait to see if the Islanders put him on re-entry - and, if they do, someone will definitely claim him at that point, one would think.

I don't know.  We're a quarter into the season so he has about $1.8-$1.9M left on his 1 year deal (taking him to RFA).  He scored 24 last year and would have scored 20 the year before in a full season (had 17 in only 61 games).  He's 25, hits, and has been known in the past to be a good penalty killer.

I know he's been beyond terrible in 16 games this season but really, he's a fairly low risk, potentially good return for any team with some cap space and a little money (i.e Detroit, Chicago, Florida, PHX, etc).

The thing is, if a team like the Islanders, who desperately need the type of player Comeau was, don't think it's worth it to hang on to him in hopes he'll turn it around . . . that raises a pretty serious red flag for me. I know the Isles aren't exactly the best managed organization in the world, but, still. He's fallen hard on fast on the depth charts of a team that needs a solid, offensive winger on their 2nd line, and they haven't been willing to give him that ice time. He comes with a pretty strong odour right now, and I think that will make a lot of teams hesitate here.

Oh I agree with what you're saying.  I just think if you're a team willing to spend a little, there is very little risk here beyond this year.

If you're the Wings and have $5-6M in cap space and an obvious need for a little depth (and youth!) why not give him a shot?  He's $1.9M for the rest of the year and if it doesn't work you can shake hands and say good bye.  They've had good luck in the past with 'reclamation' type projects (Cleary, Bertuzzi, Eaves to a lesser extent, etc).

Hey, if he was signed beyond this year I'm with you.  Red flags and all.  But if you told any single GM this past summer that a 25 year old, ~25 goal guy, who hits and can play PK is available for $1.9M you'd have 30 GM's calling his agent.

If a team has some bucks and would have cap space sending a kid down who is hitting a wall, Comeau's only got a one year deal.

If he doesn't pan out, waive him. If they want to save some bucks, put him on re-entry waivers.

From what I read, he didn't get much of a top 6 shot - little PP time and a cut in ice time. They put him with Rolston (who is pretty questionable - see his performance with the Devils) and Bailey, a kid that may or may not work out. Add in the balance of a lousy club - Comeau is hardly the root of what ails the Ilses -and a coach/management looking for a scapegoat after a tough contract negotiation.

I don't know his situation well enough to be sure but it smells like a change of scenery might work out for him.

But, on the flip side, the fact that he's only on a one year deal raises more questions for me as to why the Islanders are willing to give him up so easy. I mean, they don't need the cap space - in fact, they're floating near the cap floor. They don't need the roster spot (from what I can tell, at least). With the way their season has gone, they're certainly able to be patient with him and hope he turns it around so that, if they don't want to keep him, they can parlay him into an asset at the trade deadline or even in the summer (he'll be an RFA). Outside of maybe being a scapegoat and the Islanders being unbelievably horribly mismanaged, I really don't understand this move from their perspective - and that would raise very very significant concerns, if I were a GM.

He hasn't been performing even with a reduced role but this has the feel of an internal dispute to me, hard to say from the outside but I doubt Blake suddenly forgot how to play. Could be some other kind of distraction too I suppose.

So who picks him up? Jackets? Ducks?

Still hard to believe that Snow would bail on a guy that quickly. Comeau had been progressing along nicely his last two seasons  prior to this bad start...Isles are dead last in GF with 38...he's been the 4th best goal scorer the past two seasons for the Isles...either something else is going on as Busta alluded too or bad more bad GM'ing coming out of Long Island.

Part of the reasoning as I gather it is that they were looking to shake up the team.

If they waive Rolston, they've definitely got a cap floor problem. Reasoner, who is another candidate, is their second best faceoff center. Don't know about Pandolfo as an alternate candidate for waivers.

You raise good points or concerns.

I'll tell you who might know: former Isles head coach and current Leafs assistant coach Scott Gordon - who Comeau scored 24 goals for.

Greg Cronin may also be familiar some with him as well because Comeau was drafted when Cronin still worked for the Isles.

Someone else who might know is Luke Schenn who played with Comeau in Kelowna.

I'm with you on this one. I get that it's too early to come to any conclusions, but it seems like something other than just playing bad and a team dumping on a guy.

I'm kind of shocked Snow couldn't fetch at 5th/6th round pick for Comeau.

That may be the most damning fact in all of this. At the very least, Snow would have tried to shop him. If he clears waivers, the word is out around the league that there's some sort of issue with the player.

Geez, weren't we pretty much ready to trade anything that wasn't nailed down to get this guy in the offseason?

Not me. Did a search. There were a couple of posters interested.
