2011-2012 Waivers thread

He hasn't been performing even with a reduced role but this has the feel of an internal dispute to me, hard to say from the outside but I doubt Blake suddenly forgot how to play. Could be some other kind of distraction too I suppose.

It's a secret process to get rid of a player in a certain situation.  Code name "Operation Gary Leeman". Rumour has it that Al Secord is will now be brought in to beat the s**t out of Comeau.  ;) ;)

If so he better keep his head up in Bridgeport...

Calgary has claimed Blake Comeau #Isles

I think Katie used to cover the Isles.

Given it was Calgary who claimed him, with their track record, it's hard to conclude much about the player yet.

Also hard to disregard his 2010/2011 season too. He'll probably help them... and if he doesn't? No harm in trying.

The Flames know that Comeau isn't the "Blake" who played for the Leafs in 2008 and was terrible, right? #possiblemixup

Comeau led Team Canada in scoring when Brent Sutter coached that U20 team to a gold medal so he'd have some insight into the player.

Calgary could certainly use help, but, I remain skeptical that Comeau is capable of providing it.

I agree. But the risk is minimal for them. They're not likely to lose anyone of substance making room. If he doesn't pan out, they can waive him and in the worst case, eat the balance of his 1 year deal.

As for the player they're getting, if this doesn't motivate him to up his game, nothing will. And it's not like the Calgary wingers are so deep that he has no chance to move up in ice time if he plays well, so he's got a fair opportunity.

I don't see a terrible downside for the player or the team in this transaction.

Comeau had a few claims, Minnesota and Nashville among them. The Islanders -- like many teams right now -- didn't want to take on salary, so they dropped him. A 25-year-old who scored 24 goals last season? Seems a tough way to lose a player, even if he's having a bad year.

It's weird they couldn't get a 5th-7th rounder or something like that for him given that level of interest. "Minnesota and Nashville among them" suggests more than them plus Calgary were interested.

Maybe Snow was being stupid, lost patience or was being vindictive and wanted to embarrass the player.

If you're willing to take on his contract, does the 7th rounder really make or break the deal? Hard to believe that it would.

Some of the New York Islanders media that I read suggested that waiving Comeau sent a message to the rest of the team that was worth more than a low-round pick. I don't necessarily buy that, as both would send just about the same message, but it's one idea floating out there.

"You guys think we'll wait for a smart move to deal with you!?"

On the surface, that strikes me as kind of a lousy thing to do intentionally. It degrades the perception of the player lower than his value. Some of his teammates may not be too appreciative.

Home sweet home for Comeau
After establishing breakout numbers in 2010-11 ? 24 goals, 46 points ? Comeau completely fizzled. In 16 dates this season, he?d produced zero points, going minus-11. Three times he was a healthy scratch.

?A combination of things,? explains Comeau, who went from averaging nearly 19 minutes of ice time last season to getting barely 13 minutes. ?There?s a lot of good forwards on the Island . . . and the opportunity was maybe a little bit less for myself. No excuses. I consider myself a guy that can help out offensively.?

Comeau and coach Jack Capuano, according to speculation, had been at odds.

He denies that.

?You know what? Me and Jack had a great relationship,? Comeau says. ?I?m not sure what the reason was for the drop in ice time . . . but I don?t want to make excuses. It?s on me to perform. I?m just happy to turn the page on that whole thing.

?My season, in my mind, is starting now. However many games there are left ? 60, 62, whatever it is ? I want to make an impact for all those games and get off on the right foot here.?

He's saying a lot of the right things. It didn't work out too badly that he gets to play in the town where his parents live.

Saw a quote somewhere of a scout who said that teams had caught on to his game and that players need to be able to adjust when that happens. Comeau hadn't adjusted yet.

Hopefully, he can and it works out for him.

Nothing to get too excited about but Comeau did get a goal and assist and was named 1st star (by Calgary media) in their game against Columbus:
4GP 1G 1A 2Pts +1 with Calgary

Ben Maxwell (ANA) and Patrick O'Sullivan (PHX) on waivers today.

Man, O'Sullivan can't seem to make it work anywhere... At the same time however, teams just can't seem to resist taking a chance.
