2011 NFL thread

Most people when they talk about it say exactly that he didn't want to play against his brother in the playoffs unless it is a superbowl. Thats been widely known for a while now.

Sure, that's a reason people have said that he would prefer the AFC to the NFC but every account I've read has had Peyton liking the situation in Denver a great deal. This is probably a case of Denver winning rather than San Fran losing.

I'm willing to bet that elway and company are going to handsomely overpay him. something in the 25-30 mill a season range. Sadly sometimes money talks over winning a championship.

By most accounts the contract he's going to sign is going to be something like 5 years and 95 million which is pretty reasonable for a QB(I think the franchise tag for a QB is 14 million). So I'll take that bet.

Personally, I think one of the bigger reasons is that the AFC just looks significantly weaker than the NFC. There's a handful of really great teams/QB's in the NFC. In the AFC who's his real competition? The Pats? The Steelers? It's a weak conference and Manning probably just took the easiest route to the Super Bowl.

If that's the case then I lost a bit of respect for him. You are the best by beating the best, not by beating a bunch of bush league guys.

As for his deal I heard just a few mins ago that he is going to get 90 mill for 3 years, but that's obviously pure speculation at this point.

Why the hell would you give him a contract that pays him till he is 41? not many QB's play to that age and even if he does his production would most likely drop off significantly. I hope he rots in denver and never wins anything there personally. Especially since the 49ers are rumored to be having to up their offer to AS quite a bit as a result of this whole debacle.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the AFC is bush league, just that it's an easier path and if you win the Superbowl, nobody complains too much about how you got there. Case in point being the 07 Giants. They got to the Superbowl out of a Fugly NFC and then won the title. Nobody puts an asterisk on it.

Well, you have to remember how NFL deals actually work. Almost all deals don't run their actual length and the reported money can include bonuses a player isn't likely to or even intended to hit. It'll be a five year deal that'll take him to retirement age and, because of non-guaranteed contracts, they'll just cut him when his play drops off.

But, hey, never fun to be the jilted suitor.

I'm a life-long Broncos fan on a Rocky Mountain High, today!  :)

I hear team owner Homer Simpson was instrumental in the recruitment process.

Ha ha, I think Peyton will be more valuable to the Broncos than a chicken-clucking Roger Clemens was to the Springfield Nuclear Plant team.  :)

I'm not delusional enough to think that the signing makes Denver a Super Bowl contender - I can see them at best "one and done" as Wild Card team.

More than a few people asked me if was considered about Manning's health issues - to which I replied "absolutely." But I think the bigger risk for Denver would have been to hitch their ride to Tebow, knowing that this opportunity came along.

The one thing I'll say about the Bronco's defense is that I think Tebow killed it over the course of the season.  It's not a shut-down defense but they held scores close for Tebow so many times last year and that just wears you down way too much.  Even if Manning is a shell of his former self, he's great at finding guys on 3rd down to extend drives.  I think it will interesting to see what the Broncos can do when their QB doesn't go 3 and out every drive until the 4th quarter.

How's he going to do in a cold weather environment compared with the Indy dome/turf?  I have no idea what his career stats are in stadiums like this either, by the way.

I would imagine it would be similar for most QBs, but he definitely gets worse as the temperature drops.  98.7 QB rating indoors, 90.8 outdoors.
When the temperature drops below 60 degrees his QB rating in about 44 games is somewhere around 87.

John Elway is a classy fellow, and probably was equally instrumental in swaying Manning's decision to sign with Denver.

Now, where does this leave Tebow?

100% he'll be dealt.

Outside of Jacksonville for ticket sales though...why would you trade for Tebow? You'd be crazy to bring him in to start and all he does is create controversy(and a need to revamp your offense mid-season) as a back-up. Unless he agrees to become a sort of H-Back/option QB/TE hybrid does he really add a ton of value outside of the box office?

Scratch SF from teams that could trade for Tim Tebow, add Miami. Candidates currently include JAX, GB, MIA, maybe more. A trade will happen.

Here's one other team that has discussed trading for Tim Tebow, even if it is considered a longshot: the Jets.

...Well, Sarge, if nothing else you gave me a good solid laugh with this.

.. I admit. I did have you in mind.

Speaking of which... You saw a lot of Pool last year. Any thoughts on him or does a "meh" sum it up?

I mean, it's fair to say the Jets were not happy with what they got last year from their safeties. I think he's passable but he probably gets exposed a little more with corners who aren't Revis-Father of the Year.

Well, we just got Carr who came second to only Joe Haden in knocked down passes in the NFL last year so maybe it'll work out. Hey, we had Elam there last year so "yay?"

Well, remember, that Revis tends not to do well in categories like that because teams just don't throw at him if they can avoid it.

I think it's just a shuffling of average guys around. The Jets replaced him with Laron Landry who isn't going to set the world on fire either. Although he may tear it in two if the 'roid rage gets him.

Fair point re. Revis. Pool played for Ryan in Cleveland where he was probably better. It's just good to know you think he's "passable."

It would be a good fit.  And an improvement on Mark Sanchez.  Trade a crappy QB for a decent FB who can play the option every once and a while.
