I wonder how long McPhee lasts. Has a GM ever changed coaches as much as he has without getting fired as well?

Jim Rutherford in Carolina is pretty close. He's on his 5th coach since taking over as GM of the franchise (though, that includes Maurice is two separate stints with the club). McPhee is on his 6th.

True... missing the playoffs 8 of the last 10 years is pretty abysmal if not for the cup win early on in the midst of that run.  But 4 years out in a row now and looking like 5 pretty soon is pretty horrid.  Yet it seems that Jim will end up promoted instead of canned.

It's important to keep in mind, though, that in the markets that the Canes and Capitals are in that hockey performance is just going to be one area where a GM is evaluated. If Leonsis or Karmanos are happy with the way their GM's are running things on the business side that can go a long way towards job security. We tend to think here that the business side of things for the Leafs' GM is idiot proof and that all they can really do in that sense is win as many games as possible that's not true for most teams in the league.

Rumour has it Montreal and Subban are working on a 6 year $50M extension...

Yikers, maybe should have locked him up a year ago instead of pushing for the bridge contract.

NJ just lost to DET with only 11 shots on net.

And we think we have it bad!

Good point!  NJ averages about 1 fewer shot for per game that the Leafs!  (While giving up 12 fewer against per game ... meaning they are slightly positive where as we are insanely negative)

Buffalo currently has the #1 and #2 overall picks for next year's draft.

This team knows how to rebuild.  It is still going to be 5 years before they are competitive but it will work out if they are patient.

Islanders have the pick top 10 protected...but the 2015 draft is McDavid so they likely don't want to risk that.

They're like the Leafs a couple years ago - not the worst team, but the worst goaltending.

My guess is that the Isles hold on to this year's pick - assuming they remain bottom 5 - and run the risk of where it could land next year.

Good point! I see where I said "on the whole season" instead of where I was just referring to the 1 game.

Zac Rinaldo played 4 seconds and got 27 pim. If the game were in philly they'd probably make him 1st star

He apparently forgot that you're supposed to wait for the other guy to engage before you start throwing punches.

In the DET-NJ game last night Cory Schneider was given a penalty for playing the puck outside of the trapezoid area. The Devils were trailing 2-1 at that point with just a little over a minute left in the game and Detroit scored right off the resulting faceoff.

And it was a bad call by a referee who really couldn't even see the play:

I don't really think we've seen this call blown before, which is a little surprising. But something like this that is so black or white really should be able to be reviewed.

I imagine this is likely among the things the GMs would like included in their expanded review.

Hmm, what team was involved in another incident involving jumping an unwilling participant?

What a disgusting organization Philly is.

I'd agree if it weren't for the fact that you're stopping the game, for at least a minute, at a point where a timeout would be pretty valuable. While a timeout is probably less damaging than a penalty(although, really, you're probably taking a team's chances of tying it up from 5 to 1 percent) I don't know how enthusiastic I am about seeing a lot of reviews in the last few minutes of a close game.
