Well, those that were interested in this year's development camp that didn't solely focus on Matthews and Marner noticed Moore played very well. 

And there is no way a UFA college player that was Top 10 in scoring is not going to get bonuses from NHL teams.  Jimmy Vesey will get the max, Schedule A and Schedule B.

16) Toronto Maple Leafs: You almost forgot Lou Lamoriello, who was incredibly overmatched as a GM in the salary cap era, was making decisions for the Leafs until this summer. Matt Martin isn't the criminal overpayment people are making it out to be but he serves no purpose there. The same can be said for Roman Polak, who will probably steal ice time from someone younger. Five years and $25 million for Frederik Andersen and his career .918 save percentage could go either way but seems an unnecessary expenditure for a team whose other offseason moves suggest they may tank for a second straight year. At least they gave Auston Matthews all the contract bonuses.

You know, I've seen that thought mentioned here as well, but to me the Polak and Martin moves show that the Leafs don't want to tank another year. I would imagine that they believe those are two players who can help the Leafs win hockey games. Then there's the fact that none of none of the older core players were dealt (although hard to say if they were just unsuccessful in that attempt). And of course "upgrading" the goaltending seems to suggest they want to win more games too.

I don't necessarily think that they're going into the season with a strict goal of making the playoffs, but I also just don't really get the tanky-vibe that we had last season.

I think the issue there is that there's always a range we're talking about. All teams that "tank" aren't the 14-15 Sabres. I don't look at what they did as being conducive to another dead last finish but I don't look at them as being real serious efforts at jumping in the standings much either.

That doesn't really line up with what Shanahan's said though:

A couple of years ago he was coming to us as a number five or six. Now he?s coming to us as a bit more of a depth guy to support some of our young players, and he understood the role he?s coming into.

So if he was coming in as a 5 or 6 a couple of years ago and now he's more of a depth guy then it sounds like he's at least a 6 or a 7 on the depth chart.  Not really someone I think they would be counting on to move the dial on the win column either way.

Admittedly, I never saw that quote before. And while the first part of it doesn't really make sense (he was never a 5/6 defenceman on the Leafs the past 2 seasons), I'd be pretty happy if he was used as more of a spare part as the quote suggests.

Although that's a lot of money to pay for a 6/7 guy (*he said through a heavy cough*).

Based on the comparables, it seems likely that he'll come in at around the $1mil mark.

As you'd see in the article though, there aren't really very many comparable players. Guys who score as little as Marincin does don't generally stay in the league very often. And they certainly don't generally get paid much in their contracts. I've brought this up before but I'd be perfectly fine trying to see him to a 4-year deal at something like $1.5mil. Even with the recent rise of analytical-friendly GMs in the league, guys like Marincin still aren't really getting paid what they're worth. It'd be smart to get him locked in now before that might change.

It also touches on the fact though that it's almost guaranteed that Marincin or Carrick will be exposed in the upcoming expansion draft. That'll be a bummer.

While I know this sounds strange coming from someone who didn't want the deal in the first place, I'm a little surprised it wasn't a 2-year contract. I think the extra year on Winnik's deal probably made him a little more attractive to Washington, and if they couldn't trade him then he might have been good expansion draft fodder. Who knows, Vegas might have found him more appealing than say Marincin.

True, but with the cap uncertainty right now, I can see the thinking being that teams wouldn't be as interested in adding an extra year of commitment to a bottom of the lineup defenceman they they would with a forward like Winnik.

Yet he ranks Toronto's offseason below the SENS.  So no, he didn't, IMO.

I think that's probably true but in order for that to go down you have to put Polak in a real role. Not top 4 necessarily but a regular with a steady presence on the PK at least. That does put the squeeze on someone.

Fair. Though, to be honest, I'm less concerned about pushing Corrado or Marincin down the depth chart a little, as I don't think either of them will contribute much more than what we saw from them last season, or that they'd be hard to replace.
