2017-2018 NHL Thread

Remember folks, the NHL doesn't think it or its players should get involved in politics on company time:

It's only tangentially NHL news but the Flames probably aren't happy that Naheed Nenshi has been re-elected Mayor of Calgary.

Or, as one team employee put it in very reasonable terms that have very appropriate perspective:

Shouldn't the "COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR" know better? How is this comment productive in anyway?

Well, when you share your name with Michael Kelso from That 70s Show I don't think poor communication is all that surprising.

Dude!

Actually, I think he's communicating very clearly.

I didn't say it wasn't clear, I'm saying it was poor. ;)

I think this calls for a semantic discussion about what 'poor communication' really means.

What is really being measured when we say 'poor communication'?

Side note, my name is Michael and happen to be married to a Jacki.

I swear, the one year I build my fantasy team around Edmonton not being a garbage factory...

I didn't expect them to be particularly good, but I certainly didn't think they'd be this much of a dumpster fire. Not really having any depth on the wing certainly isn't doing them any favours.

Just checking the league standings and it's like:

30. Edmonton
31. Arizona

... haven't I seen this movie before? Like the last friggen' decade.

27.  Buffalo
28.  Montreal
29.  New York Rangers

And Buffalo isn't far from the bottom either.  Last decade indeed (with Montreal taking our spot ;) )

Vegas is killing it too, there is no forecasting anything these days. The league is pretty flat.

Not sure where to post this, but has anyone watched Ice Guardians on Netflix?

Mrs. Wigwal and I are about halfway through it and it's pretty enjoyable so far. I think it does a good job of celebrating what people love about fighting in hockey and also asks the tough questions about the consequences for the players and also the diminishing role of these types of players in the NHL.

Is that the one with Westgarth in it? Large chunks of it filmed here in Belfast during his season here. He was a massive disappointment for us. I also know the Dr who did her PHD in hockey violence quite well.

The documentary itself comes across a bit of a mixed message I think. They seem to suggest that yes there is an issue with concussions in hockey, but that they're caused by big hits and collisions rather than fighting, so fighting might be ok cos it could make people face the consequences for a big hit that connects with the head. At least that was the way I took it.

7. Two years ago, Los Angeles and San Jose were among those who asked Boston about Zdeno Chara. Last summer, I think there were others. (There were rumblings about Toronto, but that was refuted by everyone involved. So don?t go crazy on it.) If the Bruins continue to struggle, it will only heat up. But GM Don Sweeney re-iterated on the weekend that his plan is to re-sign the future Hall of Famer and talks are under way to do so.

Trust your feelings, Don.

Re-signing a soon to be 41 year old defenseman on his last legs sounds like a solid plan.

We are only two weeks into the season. Forecasting small sample sizes is rarely going to be accurate.
