2017-2018 NHL Thread

FWIW I typically think it's more fun to discuss these sorts of things from a who should win rather than who will win based on the hockey writers well known biases/tendencies sort of perspective.

Ignoring everything the hockey media's taught me about the Hart trophy, I'd give it to just the best player period. I know it says "most valuable to his team" right there in the description but that's one of those things that I don't think the people who came up with that decades and decades of years ago really thought would be a massive debate like that. Anyway that's McDavid this season. I do think that MacKinnon would very much be top-3 there still, alongside maybe Malkin.

Some light reading on this very topic that I don't care about.

I don't have a problem with that interpretation, although I think the idea that McDavid's relative goodness at the game is actually making things worst for Edmonton long term by hurting their lottery odds is an interesting thing to consider.

That said, I always feel like we underrate a two way game in this discussion. The idea that Datsyuk never won the award strikes me as the worst example of this. That's why I think Giroux would need to be in the conversation.

I've actually heard a number of people throw Kopitar and Barkov's name into the mix, representing the two-way forward there. But oddly not that many people who have brought up Giroux's. Maybe it's because he's not playing centre any more? Anyway I've always been a fan of Giroux's so I'm happy for his success this season.

Is the underrating of two-way play more like most people not knowing how to rate defensive play? i.e. it doesn't show up on the box stats, therefore, ?\_(ツ)_/?.

Maybe, but at least when it comes to award voters it seems like there's some overlap between people who don't factor defense into the Hart and people who think the Norris shouldn't just reward talented offensive defensemen.

This will help him get a full summer of off-season training in.

Our buddy Burkie out of the playoffs with no 1st or 2nd round pick... again. At least they didn't finish 2nd last and they do have next year's first.

We'll take a D-man for a combination of pick/negotiating rights to JVR/prospect.

Even then...outside of Dougie Hamilton I'm not sure there's much on their blue line I'd want. Giordano is good but turns 35 this year and signed for four more years at almost 7 million per, Hamonic is ok but super limited, Mark Stone made roughly 600,000 dollars per point this year. Brodie?

If Hamilton's name pops up in trade rumours again the Leafs should be all over that.

Fun question/sad rumination time: If you were given the choice of adding Hamilton or Seguin this off-season who would you choose?

Mostly because if I were to pick up a centre for the Leafs, it'd be one that can defend as well (i.e. Johnny).

Sure. I wouldn't say no to Seguin exactly but...yeah.

Seguin has just 1 year left on his contract before he'll need a new cap hit of probably around $10mil while Hamilton has 3 years left at his current affordable rate. That'd be the big deciding factor for me.

And on that note, Karlsson and Doughty dominate the 2019 free agency talks right now but Seguin's contract expires at that same time and his next one could be a monster.

True and that thought was what prompted the question in the first place. That said, there are a lot of people who are pro-Tavares coming here and that contract is likely to be similar.

And you're right re: Seguin and free agency but that's a situation where I'd be gobsmacked if Dallas let it get remotely that far.
