2017-2018 NHL Thread

I have to admit, there's a bit of the anarchist in me that kind of wants Edmonton to win it but only because I genuinely think that if Edmonton wins enough draft lotteries then rather than focusing on my fun/sort-of jokey hatred on them enough people might come around to the fairly serious point I'm making re: them and the inherent ridiculousness of the draft lottery to begin with.

Where would you take things from here? My ideal solution is just abolishing the draft entirely, but since that's obviously not even sorta in the realm of possibility I think the current set-up where even the worst team has only an 18.5% chance of winning the lottery is pretty fine. I'd thrown in a provision saying that a team can't win the lottery twice in a row or something as well but that's about it.

I'm not as pessimistic about the chances of people eventually coming around to drafts being unnecessary in a hard cap league but I think, and a real math person could come up with something specific, that you could come up with a more complicated formula where your chances aren't just influenced by where the team finished this year but also where the team drafted in years past.

But, again, that relies on people coming around on the idea that failure shouldn't be rewarded.

I guess if Carolina wins it, the GM spot is a bit more attractive.

Really happy both Edmonton and Vancouver are outside again.

Not happy that Habs are top 3.  Hopefully they go off the board for some french guy we've never heard of

It'll be Buffalo, Carolina or...the Habs.

Buffalo or Habs would make the Atlantic exciting again... so, that'd be ok.

(tho TheAthletic's Habs reporter speculated Dahlin would make the Habs desirable to Tavares... which would be bad)

Carolina feels wrong, given recent management/ownership upheavals, but it might might jimmy a defenseman loose, which might be nice.

Ottawa keeps the 4th overall pick instead of what could very well be an 18.5% chance at Jack Hughes (who looks to be on a Matthews/Eichel level).

Just a reminder, this is a celebratory tweet in which this organization is happy that because they were so bad last year a system designed to reward terrible teams has rewarded them.

Is this because they can't compete financially with other teams? No, there's a hard cap. Is it because they had a ton of success and had to rebuild after all that success *checks notes on whether or not the Sabres have ever had a lot of success* no. Is it because they haven't had high picks before and so didn't have an opportunity to be good? No. Is it because they gamed a stupid system and were intentionally bad to prepare for the future? No.

They were just bad. So good news for their fans and everything but you'd think the team itself could have a little more dignity than celebrating this.

The Hurricanes also asked Francis to work from home, per 31 Thoughts, so that's another great way for this team to get an in with the NHL's old boys' club.

Nieuwendyk also quit. He had been a pro scout/advisor with the team since 2014.

Someone didn't want to wait until after the Calder Cup.
