2017-2018 NHL Thread

Garth Snow responded with this when asked by a reporter why he deserves to remain as the Islanders GM:

"For me, 2006, when I took over this position, it was a situation where it was an all-out rebuild where we had to bring in talent through the draft," Snow said. "Now we're in a situation where we feel we can compete for a Stanley Cup."

Does... does Snow not know that his team missed the playoffs by 18 points?

Snow has actually been a GM for over a decade?!

Poile, Holland, and Doug Wilson are the only ones with longer current tenures.

There's a rumour that before Charles Wang sold the team in 2014, he gave Snow a 10-year contract extension.

It's a real shame that there isn't some sort of online platform that would allow him to address this immediately.

Why I, herman, am OK with Chiarelli's return:

4. Why am I OK with Chiarelli?s return? Mostly it?s because I saw all kinds of coaching issues with the team last year. Chiarelli assembled a roster that almost every Oilers fans and NHL observer thought was going to make the playoffs this year, if not win the Stanley Cup. That was the near unanimous assessment. That the Oilers failed to do so is partly related to everyone, including Chiarelli over-estimating the strength of the group, but there was no end of coaching issues related to power play and penalty kill performance, the team?s poor start in games, player personnel decisions such as the under-use of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with Connor McDavid and the over-use of Leon Draisailt with McDavid, and with the over-use of struggling vets such as Mark Letestu, Milan Lucic and Andrej Sekera, often in key spots on special teams. Hardly any player?s game trended up this year. The young players stayed the same, in general, or took a step back in terms of their performance. The old veterans were kept forever in key roles on the top lines and special team units, even as they failed to get the job done there.

There we have it, it's all the coaches's fault.  I see Chiarelli's big plan will be to fire the coaches.

Pretty surprised they didn't blame the players' lack of grit and heart and character, tbh.

I love how he blames the coach for using Lucic too much yet doesn't blame Chiarelli for signing him to a 7 year deal?!?!

Also, how does one deliberately nerf a team that has McDavid on an ELC?

Habs fired Sylvain Lefebvre as their AHL guy.  Apparently not happy with the development of AHL players to NHL.  Perhaps they should consider drafting better players first?

Vegas sweep the the Kings.  Will be crazy if they win the cup.
They'll sweep their way into the final only to be curb stomped by the Pens and then we'll have to see Sid celebrating again and people will lament the fact the Pens didn't have a tougher opponent in the finals than an expansion team

If the Canes weren't being super cheap this would have been a pretty great spot for the Dubas/Keefe duo (assuming Dubas hasn't been promising the GM job here).

Huge missed opportunity for a low brow pun, in my opinion. Is he starting to feel the burn?

The Oilers are apparently signing a soon-to-be 30 year old KHL goalie because he put up good stats while playing on that SKA super team. Goaltending problems = solved.

Oooooh I wonder who it could be!

Not to mention that this goalie struggled in the AHL when he played there, and wasn't particularly good int he KHL playoffs, either.
