2017-2018 NHL Thread

Re: 1999 Draft.

When Frank Kaberle is top 15 in scoring in the draft year, is was a pretty weak draft.

*Only 27 players broke 100 career points.  :o

Just wait a year or two, and they just might be NHL teammates. #ChiaPower

In an alternate universe somewhere they already are.

I saw the reactions of this on twitter before actually seeing the replay. Nashville fans were furious this was disallowed. Everyone else thought that it was a good call because they felt it was clear the Preds player spun Luongo around by pushing his pad with his stick, which would be a fair reason to disallow a goal. So I figured this was just the team that lost a goal being upset. But after watching the replay I think I'm with the Preds on this one. Arvidsson was just going for the puck and there's no way his poke there had enough force in it to move a 220 lbs + equipment Roberto Luongo like that. Luongo just never had full control of the puck.

I disagree. I think it's the right call. It doesn't always takes that much force to move a goalie who is resting his weight on the sides of his pads that do not provide for much friction with the ice. Luongo's legs don't move, they just turn with his body. The only reason he moves is because Arvidsson drives forward with his stick in Luongo's equipment - in fact, in the replay, it looks like the stick bends because it's pressing up against Luongo. Luongo may not have had full control, but it was forced loose by him being moved rather than contact with the puck - which is not a legal play, and, therefore, no goal.

I'm ok with the call for the reasons busta stated. It's clear to me that he pushed Luongo. The only thing that puts a slight wrench into it is that Luongo pushed him first and I believe that contributed to being in a position where he couldn't stop the puck.

I didn't have a take when I first saw this, as basking in the vitriol was its own satisfaction.

Upon closer inspection, these are loafers I'd second busta's read.

From the second I saw it I had the same feelings as busta.  Also, Luongo did exactly what many goalies do when an oncoming player is coming, and that is put up his blocker to protect himself.  Arvi continued to drive through that.  I don't think Luongo can be blamed for "initiating contact" when he believes he has the puck and puts up his blocker to protect himself.

I'm still shocked he had the chance to trade both Seguin AND Hall and got absolutely taken to the cleaners both times.

Hall for Larsson. LOL.  That's an all-time worst trade type that tarnishes a GM's legacy.

If the movement had stemmed from Luongo's initial push, I might have been more open to seeing it as an influence, but, he doesn't actually start turning until Arvidsson's stick in pressing into his equipment. It probably contributed to the puck not being completely frozen underneath him, but, it's not the reason it came loose.

Funnier are the contracts he handed out..Lucic, Draisaitl contracts are brutal. What about the Griffen Reinhart trade for the 16th and 33rd picks in 2015. The 16th turned into Brazal...some bad deals

It was a meaningful one though, buried the Blues season.

Not quite, no. Blues are still very much alive, and the last spot in the West could very easily come down to game 82.
Keith scored with 9 seconds left in regulation, ouch. Maybe didn't bury them but it certainly hurt their chances.

It didn't help their chances, no, but, teams come back from that kind of stuff all the time. If they win their last two games in regulation, they'll make the playoffs. They still control their own fate.

So there's a chance that the Panthers and Flyers will be tied in points, ROW, points in their season series, and goal differential after 82 games (pretty unlikely, the conditions for this to happen are at the bottom of the image below). If this happens the league's announced they will play a play-in game to break the tie:
