2019-2020 NHL Thread

That Twitter user's hockey podcast is called the Morning Bagger.

I've never heard of the guy or podcast before, but should note that he's not just some rando on twitter. He played 4 years in the NCAA, 4 years in the ECHL, and the last 6 years in what looks to be a minor league in Germany. It looks like he's located in Florida right now.

I'm not saying we shouldn't take that with the grain of salt, but not a stretch to think he would be connected to some of the minor leaguers in Arizona or something and word spread from there. Also again just passively scrolling through his feed it doesn't look like he often jumps into the world of rumours/gossip.

Buffalo is leaning hard into being 'efficient' and 'lean' by leveraging technology: i.e. video scouting with slow-mo, and presumably, Zoom and Enhance.
?With all the existing technology that exists in the world of sports today, we can move forward much leaner than we operated in the past and much more efficient,? Terry Pegula said. ?We have all the tools to look at and fine-tune over and over, slow it down in slow motion, back it up, look at it again, of a player and what he does in a split second."

My first problem with this statement is that there's not a lot of quality video of non-pro games, where you'd presume the team is looking to "scout".

Especially if you're trying to watch play away from the puck.

Yeah, which is tough to do even on NHL games and their multi-camera productions.

This really seems like the perfect time to experiment with a temporary luxury tax system.

I doubt the league would entertain that at the moment...the small market teams will have a hard time over the next while, and I think a luxury tax would likely exacerbate their struggles in terms of talent retention.

I'd suggest a pretty limited system though, not like something the NBA has. Teams could only exceed the cap by say $4-5mil or so, basically to where the league expected the 20/21 ceiling to be pre-covid. And of course the tax collected would go back to the smaller market teams that have been hit the hardest.

And again, it would just be a temporary/emergency measure for the next 2 or 3 years while revenues catch back up. I mean I would hope after that the league would want to make it a permanent feature but if not then just scrap it once things are back to normal.

You can do a luxury tax whereby teams have leeway to sign their own players over and above a cap number but where being at the cap would still not let them sign players from other teams. That's what the NBA has done for years.

Interesting new wrinkle for the updated CBA:

https://twitter.com/RussoHockey/status/1280264003915255809

For example, if Shea Weber were to retire before the 2025-2026, instead of a one year hit of ~$24.6M, the Preds would have 3 years of $7.86M (Weber's current cap hit) plus whatever the remainder (around $1M) in the fourth.

What was the Parise to NYI deal?

I'll tell you for $9.99.

OK, but make sure herman gets his kickback.

The deal was Parise for Ladd. Both players waived their NTCs, but the deal still didn't get done. Possibly because there were cap issues that just couldn't be solved. Possibly because the deal leaked to the media and Lou nixed it out of spite.

Thank you, e-payment sent.
