2019-2020 NHL Thread

The NHL's 3 nominees for the GM of the Year award, which was voted on after the 2nd round of the playoffs, are 3 of the 4 GMs in the 3rd round of the playoffs.

I mean I'm not gonna lose any sleep about a dumb award but we can all agree that if this was voted on prior to the playoffs like all awards usually are there would have been a different result right.

And if Colorado had beaten Dallas it would have 100% been Sakic's award to lose.

Sorry Joe, you really messed up there by not bolstering that ever important #3 goalie position.

You take that back! Hutchinson is a fine #3 goalie!  ;D

I mean I probably should take that back as Hutchinson is actually a fine #3 goalie and Sakic acquiring him in Februrary meant that Colorado didn't have to play whoever Hunter Miska is in the playoffs.

I like how, for me, Sakic went from being "this guy doesn't know how to GM" to "this guy is the best GM".

Heh yeah Sakic's reputation definitely turned around quite a bit the past few years. I'm sure MacKinnon realizing he's actually one of the best players on the planet played a large role in that but he's made a number of nice moves too of course.

What I find funny sometimes is how one GM will be viewed negatively for an action and another GM will be viewed positively for the same action.

For example, right now a lot of GM's are saying that Dubas is asking too much for his players and it is reported that he is earning a reputation as a GM that asks for a lot in return in a trade.  That seems like he is getting a bit of a negative review from his peers because he has a price and he would like that price met.

However, that is exactly what Sakic did with Duchene.  He set the price, and he said that he wasn't going to budge off that price.  Sakic is viewed as being a wise GM in that situation because he waited until he got what he asked for.

MacKinnon is interesting in that he looked like an RNH type of 1st overall pick, then BOOM at about 23 years old.

RNH has also really improved though over the past couple of seasons, weirdly enough at ~25 years old.

It's unusual but not all that unheard of for a really good young player to make that sort of leap somewhere in seasons 3-5. If you just look at the list of #1 picks you see quite a few guys like Thornton, Nash or Lecavalier who didn't really take off until roughly that age.

The lesson being, I think, that you should probably be patient with really talented young players.

The 2020 NHL Draft will take place on Oct. 6 and 7 followed by the opening of free agency on Oct. 9, the league announced on Friday.

So I guess they'll announce the Leafs signed Pietrangelo at 12:01pm Friday the 9th of October.

Put it in your calendar fellas.

Ward was previously the intern head coach after taking over midseason.

This news itself isn't exactly noteworthy but I think we're at the point now where it's safe to say Brad Treliving will be staying on as Calgary's GM, and as I wrote about a few weeks ago... that seems unwise.

Agree with you. Calgary doesn't look good moving forward. They need to make some big moves.

Except for Marner. The leafs should trade Marner. Did you see him in the playoffs that one year in August during a pandemic. He just wasn't himself man.

Sincerely, he deserves it. Make it so.

But also, *cackles gleefully*

Yeah I was really wondering what his next contract would look like. He's just a year away from UFA now and nobody has really seemed to talk about that (granted other things are going on right now).

Make the Washington Capitals a pre-retirement destination where everyone (who can) gets performance bonuses based on how many goals Ovechkin scores (or primary assists on Ovechkin goals if it has to be individualized).
