Once the Leafs/Dubas hired former Soo player development director and Panthers scout Wes Clark, the Tavares signing with Toronto chances skyrocketed.

Ya he was best friends with Johnny T and Matt Moulson.  Seems to see the game on his whole own level or at least on par with Dubas.

Dubas, re: Flat Cap
?I know that seems to be the narrative about the team, and there?s a lot of talk about it,? he said of the flat-lining cap and apparent impact on this season. ?If we were facing a situation where some of our core players were up at the end of this year ? were unrestricted (free agents) or they had a large amount of leverage as some of our past players have had ? I would maybe feel differently and say we?re gonna have to make a major move and delete from our core. But with everybody signed going into this offseason, I think we?re gonna have some space to take care of our restricted free agents that we have, and potentially look at some of our own UFAs. But I don?t feel that this season there should be any added pressure. I think the players have an expectation and we have an expectation that we?re going to be competitive and that we?re trying to contend to win the Stanley Cup.

?We?ve got everybody set for 2019-20 to finish and then 2020-21, and then we?ll have to continue to see how different things progress and develop over that time.?

Lou taught Dubas very well on how to say absolutely nothing in a series of statements making up an entire paragraph.

The Star has a piece on why Hendrick withdrew from his position with MLSE. brb, cutting onions for a lasagna.

Yeah. His reasons for leaving MLSE are very touching and completely understandable.

Oh yeah now you don't post a link... https://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/2020/07/15/maple-leafs-part-ways-with-longtime-sports-reporter-paul-hendrick.html

I'm glad this cleared up whether he was fired/let go or not. And that his wife is doing well.

Matthews was named one of the three Lady Byng nominees (along with MacKinnon and ROR).

Safe to assume gentlemanly off-ice conduct was not a requirement for this award.

Ha, that's exactly what I was thinking when I read it earlier. I think off ice conduct should definitely factor in, not that anyone is likely losing any sleep over who wins the lady byng.

Are we sure it was the teams?  They could do the same.

I can see the PA being all over it because it would entice other teams to do it, and then the players would be pushed into cutting their summer break short.

Come on...

Yeah, this one is a little ridiculous. "Oh no, Toronto is using it's available resources to help develop players! We can't allow that to happen!"

Teams are trying to take away whatever competitive advantages other teams have, and we've reached the point where things have clearly gone too far. It's one thing to try to keep salaries and other costs in-line with revenues (differences in opinion over methodology aside). It's quite another to dictate how teams develop their prospects.
