You know, it would really suck if Kapanen becomes the casualty of being stuck with that final year of the bad Marleau contract. This was terrible foresight by management and you could argue that there have been no tangible gains in bringing Marleau aboard in the first place.
Kappy doesn't have to be a casualty. Trade Hyman along with Brown and you gain over 2.3 million if you replace them with Marlies. Add in Kadri and there's another 3.5. There's ways of keeping guys, just not all of them.gunnar36 said:herman said:https://twitter.com/kristen_shilton/status/1141879710370140162

All the words basically to say, we will evaluate our options.
That and the thinly veiled finger pointing at the Marner camp for all the bluster.

Zee said:Hyman's a hard worker for sure, but he's not the most skilled forward you'll ever see and he's 27. How much longer do you think his hard work ethic will take him especially considering the type of game he plays?

He's only entering his 4th NHL season, so it's not as if there's a ton of miles on that body.

Well we don't have a team full of Hyman's. We literally have just one. There's plenty and plenty of skill elsewhere.

I was replying to the "we need more guys like Hyman" mentality. No we don't. Maybe Trevor Moore is a Hyman replacement who might actually have more skill, is younger and is cheaper for the next few seasons. Hyman doesn't have to be moved away from this offseason, but in a year or 2? I would say so.

So when the Maple Leafs hired Needham as an amateur scout last August -- making her the first woman to serve in such a role full-time -- and named six-time Olympian Hayley Wickenheiser as their assistant director of player development -- the highest hockey operations role ever held by a woman -- it made waves within the sport. Needham and Wickenheiser joined a staff that already included Meg Popovic, Toronto's director of well-being and performance, and Barb Underhill, a former world champion pair figure skater who serves as a skating consultant to both the Maple Leafs and their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Every time Toronto players went to the rink last season, they not only interacted with women, but relied on women to help them become better hockey players. Suddenly, the Maple Leafs had as many women working in their front office as all the other teams in the league combined.

I don't read anything into Dubas' comments. What's he going to say? Same with the not a foregone conclusion they'd match an offer sheet for Marner/RFA's.
As for Marleau I think the Matthews' interview was more telling. It sounded, to me anyway, like Marleau was going. Being close to Marleau he's probably heard the plan that could already be in place that we'll most likely have to wait for because of the bonus to be paid July 1.
The next 2 weeks should be interesting.

Yeah. Also, having other guys who have that kind of work ethic - especially to play on the 4th line - wouldn't be a bad thing, either.
And, Hyman's not being moved this summer. With his injury, his value is low, and his contract isn't onerous enough to force the team's hand - especially since his contributions are very much in line with his pay/cap hit. Would I like to see a more talented player on the Tavares-Marner line? Sure. Do I think it would make a huge difference to that line's production? Nope, and, therefore, not a priority at all.
