I'm not playing wordsmith. And I think word-smithing is an honorable skill. So maybe I'm not better than that.

My name is not Nik.

Are you seriously reading that post in a pure literal sense?

I know you aren't Nik, but there is a Nik here who plays that game. And kinda ironic that you ask if I took a post literally when you took mine the same way??

Perhaps quotes around "Wordsmith Nik" would have been clearer.  I honestly took it as you were calling him Nik.  Like you had just reached a point where you stopped reading who was posting and just guessed at who it was based on what was posted.

You really believe I took your wordsmithing comment literally? I suppose the real irony is my current struggles to find the right words to convey what I'm thinking about this conversation.

This was always one of my favourite Cody Ceci gifs but I hate it now thanks.

The biggest question is who was the player that covered for him and blindly shot the puck to the middle of the ice. That's the big give away on that play.

And I've watched it a couple times now. He had nothing. His teammates basically painted him into a corner. Why is everyone just watching?

They brought this up a lot on Sens broadcasts with respect to Ceci.  They broke down 5 or 6 plays to show how it wasn't really Ceci's fault that the giveaway happened because he really did not have any options.

The most common thing I have heard about Ceci is that he has all the tools, he just doesn't have a toolbox.

Also it's nice that Kerfoot starts with a K, so that if Kapanen plays on the third line you have that nice Kerfoot to Kapanen ring to it.

Korshkov is never allowed to play on a line with those 2.

Playing for the Senators has to be like playing with a lead apron on. It's plausible.

Let's hope so.

Why can't he just skate it back to his own zone with possession?

He's not without blame on the play but it's not bad enough of a play to be used as an example of why Ceci sucks. Again, the player that should be called out is the one that threw the puck to centre ice and actually gave the puck away.

I gotta say the longer Gardiner stays unsigned the more I'm wishing the Leafs did something to find a way to get him back on a short term deal. Even if it was having to give up another pick to have Ottawa re-sign Ceci prior to the trade and then getting them to retain something on that 1-year deal.

Why aren't other teams clamoring to sign him?

To be fair we don't know what offers he's received.

League-wide cap space is dwindling, if the big ticket RFAs get signed to their projected cap bumps. The middle tier of free agents need to decide if they want to hold out for a pay day or at least get to play.

I've talked about this before, but in a nutshell I think there's a lot of hockey people out there who view him only as a 40-point "offensive defenceman" with defensive deficiencies and they don't want to pay $6-7mil+ for someone like that. I'd argue about their reasoning but maybe they're right about their conclusion. It's tough to drop that kind of money on a defenceman who doesn't have a history of PK'ing and doesn't actually put up a ton of points. Jake's value in the NHL thus far has almost entirely been just dominating possession at 5-on-5 and it's tough to determine how much that's worth to a team.

We may have a tendency to overvalue our own.
