Well, without really agreeing or disagreeing with you there if your rationale is that Johnsson is better than Kapanen then it stands to reason that trading the worse player limits what you can get back as well.

Well yes, that's generally how it works.
We'd just have to show them the top 25 under 25 from last year.

Sure. So I'm saying that it doesn't necessarily follow that you'f want to trade the less good of the two.

As much as I love Kapanen, his elite speed will decline with age whereas Johnsson's superior skill set will stand the test of time more reliably IMO.  If the Leafs can get a decent defenseman for Kapanen it could be a good move.  Kapanen is cheap for what he brings, though, and he plays a really solid defensive role despite being a forward.  I doubt Dubas could pull off a trade that makes the team better overall while helping our cap situation.

But Kapanen just turned 23 a week ago.  He's at a stage where he can still be improving.  I think we've got at least 7 years before we have to worry about an age-related decline in speed.
 
Also, I'm not sure that speed does decline much more quickly than any other physical attribute.

Well, I think I'd like to trade the less "good" of the two. The team loses less that way.




I get what you're saying Nik and I don't disagree. The better of the two will bring you more in return. My personal opinion is that's Johnsson. I'm sure that's not the opinion of everyone.

Personally I think they're pretty similar.

I would disagree. I think Johnsson has more finesse and offensive ability. Kapanen has more speed and more defensive ability. Their value to the team is probably pretty similar for different reasons.

1 year @ 1M on the 3rd pairing would be worth it.  Buryable if needed...

I said pretty similar, not identical. We're not talking about Tie Domi vs. Sergei Berezin.

Well, and that minor niggling detail where they had virtually the exact same year last year.
 
I think they're pretty close in value (I might put Kapanen slightly above Johnsson), but they're not very close in playing style at all.
 
Without delving too far into the Leafs off-season, so far.. I believe that if Shattenkirk is willing to explore signing with a contender and signing for, anywhere near 1.4 million or less, Dubas needs to do whatever he can to sign the guy.
I could live with waiving guys like Harpur and Holl, if it meant having a player like that, even for a year. I don't think Harpur and Holl are in our future anyway. I get that it's nice to have depth, but;

Reilly-Shattenkirk
Muzzin-Barrie
Dermitt-Ceci

Looks like a promising group to me.
