:o

Even if he wasn't having 1 or 2 below-par seasons for him that he could very well rebound from, I don't think he'd be interested in signing with a Canadian team (something I think Friedman or someone said too) so he'd be a one-and-done and probably not worth the cost.

This whole video is pretty crazy.
Yikes.

Wikipedia:
Playing career
Robitaille played in 382 regular season NHL games, scoring 23 goals and adding 105 assists. He was most well known for his punishing hip checks. He also appeared in 13 playoff games, six with Buffalo and seven for Vancouver, tallying one assist. His career ended pre-maturely in 1977 when he was blind-sided by Dennis Owchar of the Pittsburgh Penguins, which caused nerve damage in his neck.[1] He would later win a lawsuit against the Canucks for mistreating his injuries.

His recall of the incident is even crazier:

It's going to be fascinating to see what the return here is. I'm only going off the top of my head so I could very well be missing someone but I think he might be the best player to get dealt since Joe Thornton. And that's before even factoring in the team acquiring him has 5 years of control there.

I agree it'll be interesting because right now, more than ever, the issue of how valuable it is to have a very, very good player that you have to pay an approximation of their market rate has never been foggier. The thinking used to be that a guy like Eichel was worth a ton of prospects and picks on top of the cap space he takes up. Now? I legitimately don't know.

Also going to be interesting to see how his back injury and the dispute with the team's medical staff on how to address impact his market.

And circling back to that Joe Thornton trade, Boston's return was pretty much universally criticized at the time but getting his cap hit off the team ($6.66mil/17.09% of the cap, equivalent of that today would be about $14mil) allowed them to sign Chara in the next offseason. I still think they should have gotten a tad more from San Jose but they obviously put a ton of value into opening up that cap space.

It will be interesting to see the health of his neck as well.  Depending on the team acquiring him...are you ok with him just doing rehab...do you sign off on surgery hoping he ends up healthier and not a recurrent neck problem guy.

His last two full seasons he has been 20 points ahead of the second place scorer on the team.  This year he finished T-5 in team scoring despite only playing 21 games and doing that with a neck injury.  Are you getting that kind of elite player or is he going to be permanently hampered by the injury limiting his effectiveness
