Martinez was also the worst Vegas defenceman by a pretty big margin in CA/60, GA/60, and xGA/60 in the playoffs. Maybe if he gave his minutes to someone else instead of trying to prove how tough he is Vegas would be playing Tampa in the Finals right now.

I can't wait for this to come to fruition

At 40-50% retained and maybe dumping Koskinen on them too it might make a little bit of sense. But the reports are Chicago has no interest in keeping/taking on any salary so if they stay firm on that Edmonton's getting fleeced.

It's really going to depend on what Edmonton gives up for me.  If they give up nothing of value it's still probably the wrong guy to add to their roster but he only has 2 years left so at 5.5M and Edmonton doesn't do so well at attracting free agents.  They do have some decent cap space available still with over 20M once you factor in Klefbom on LTIR.

The rumour has been that Chicago wants to get Seth and Caleb Jones together

https://theathletic.com/1060370/2021/07/07/the-uber-incident-did-a-secret-video-destroy-an-nhl-career

Chris Wideman stood shoulder to shoulder with six Ottawa teammates in general manager Pierre Dorion?s office. It was Nov. 4, 2018, and his career with the Senators would soon be over.

Just a few minutes earlier, Wideman had been playing soccer in the lower level of the Canadian Tire Centre before a game against Tampa Bay. When a media-relations person came to get him and the other players, Wideman?s first reaction was: ?We?re all being traded??

In Dorion?s office, Wideman was lined up alongside Matt Duchene, Thomas Chabot, Dylan DeMelo, Alex Formenton, Chris Tierney and Colin White. They were looking up at a TV mounted on the wall, and when the GM hit play, it didn?t make sense to Wideman. He had no clue what he was watching.

The grainy video was from a few weeks earlier. A supposed private conversation during an Uber ride in Arizona had been secretly recorded. It showed the players jammed into an SUV, talking smack about their own team and assistant coach Marty Raymond, in particular.

Dorion went down the line, addressing the players. ?I traded for you,? he said to DeMelo and Tierney. ?You?re supposed to be a leader,? he said to Duchene.

Then Dorion got to Wideman, and it was clear he would be the scapegoat.

?I was told that someone?s head was going to roll and it was going to be me,? Wideman says.

I mean scapegoat?.maybe?  That being said he?s an offensive defenseman who had a career high of 17 points.

Feels tough to peg his value right now. For a team with a lot of cap space though he might come cheap.

Yup. Potential buy-low opportunity there. A lot of teams are going to be scared off by the fact he's had 3 major shoulder issues in the last 2+ years.

Also, he is sort of the poster boy for why we should probably wait a little while to evaluate contracts. After he signed and had his two big years it was "Look at how brilliant the Blues are for locking up one of the league's best goalscorers to a 8 million a year contract" and then he's never really had a season since that would justify the price tag.

I'm not sure I agree with that. For the first 4 years of the contract, he produced at a level that definitely justify a $7.5M cap hit - 33+ goals, and 66+ points in each. Injuries wrecked his past 2 seasons, though, and he might just be damaged goods now.

I guess the way I look at it is he signed for 10.5% of the cap. I think if you signed someone today for the equivalent(8.6 or so) you'd probably want more production than 33 goals and 66 points. That's obviously not terrible production or anything but I think it falls a little bit south of the "value for money" line on my graph.

That's fair. I don't think St Louis got a deal there or anything, but, for the first 4 years of the deal, they probably got close to market value.

So next year the divisions go back to normal.

Pacific: Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, LA, San Jose, Seattle, Vancouver, Vegas
Central: Arizona, Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, Winnipeg
Atlantic: Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa, Toronto
Metro: Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, NYI, NYR, Philly, Pittsburgh, Washington

Pacific: VGK (2nd), EDM (11th), CGY (20th), VAN (24th), LA (25th), SJ (26th), ANA (30th), Seattle (N/A)

Central: COL (1st), MIN (9th), NSH (13th), WPG (14th), STL (15th), DAL (17th), CHI (21st), ARI (22nd)

Atlantic: FLA (4th), TOR (6th), TBL (8th), BOS (10th), MON (18th), OTT (23rd), DET (27th), BUF (31st)

Metro:  CAR (3rd), PIT (5th), WAS (7th), NYI (12th), NYR (16th), PHI (19th), CLB (28th), NJ (29th)

Number of playoff teams:
Atlantic (5), Central (5) Metro (4), Pacific (2)

Average league rank:
Central (14), Metro (14.9), Atlantic (15.9), Pacific (19.7)

Playoff series wins:
Atlantic (8), Metro (3), Pacific (2), Central (2)

Playoff game wins:
Atlantic (40), Metro (18), Central (15), Pacific (10)

Seems like a soft bet to give Seattle a nice opportunity to make the playoffs in their opening year.

With the expansion draft roster freeze going into effect on Saturday, we will probably see some player movement in the next few days.

I feel like there's barely any teams who are really in a pickle this year. Minnesota solved their problem. Nashville solved theirs's with the Arvidsson trade. Colorado's getting bailed out by Johnson waiving his NMC (although they'll still lose a decent player). I think Calgary's the only team who are really sweating their decision since they'll likely need to either expose Giordano or Tanev. This draft is probably going to look a lot different than Vegas'.

edit: oh and Tampa.

Tampa is losing Yanni Gourde or some young up and comer.

Meanwhile in Buffalo

I'm kinda surprised the talk seems to be about them going the 8 skater route to protect Cernak. I'd rather go 7F-3D to make sure Gourde stays. Losing him as well as potentially Goodrow and Coleman is a much, much bigger hole to fill than losing their #4 who probably gets a little boosted because of the guys he plays with.
