2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Matthews with Kapanen's speed would be absolutely deadly, even though that's not really how he score the majority of his goals. Could be a great added dimension to his game, though. Could push him into the 60+ goal territory.

Marner as a legit 30+ goal scorer to go with everything would make him into a terrifying player to defend. He's already a decent goal scorer, so that would just push him over the top. I think I'd opt for this one.

Nylander with an edge . . . would be useful, though, he already is willing to play in the dirty areas in front of the net. Some increased help from him winning puck battles would be useful, but, I'm not sure it would move the needle much in terms of production. Would drive other teams nuts, though.

How much of Marchand's productivity do we think is driven by Bergeron? Not taking away from Marchand, but Bergeron is one hell of a hockey player.

They're both excellent (Pastrnak is a great passenger too). They get very, very cushy deployment.

That Marner upgrade would be insane.  If he could score like Kane I don't know how you would defend the line he plays on.  He could snipe but then would be feeding a combination of Nylander/Matthews/Tavares who would be more open for shots.

I am about to read this instead of doing work.

Question 15: When Mark Hunter was still working in the organization alongside Kyle Dubas, how much of a say did he get in draft decisions? The Leafs picks from 2015 to 2017 are largely underwhelming and I?m curious as to how much of that falls on Hunter?s shoulders?
There?s some confusion around this in general in the fan base, so I?ll try to clear it up a little.

In 2015, before Lou Lamoriello joined the organization, the draft was more of a by-committee approach. Dubas and the analytics department had quite a bit of input, and Hunter didn?t get everyone he wanted. (Travis Konecny, a London native, as one example.)

There were apparently some pretty heated debates that year. Even over the first pick, which they used on Mitch Marner, who was a huge Hunter favourite.

The 2016 and 2017 drafts, however, were very much Hunter?s domain under GM Lou Lamoriello. And other than Auston Matthews, I don?t see a ton of NHL talent coming out of those picks.

Konecny vs Dermott, Bracco, Dzierkals doesn't look particularly good on this side of the rebuild; the bigger whiff is Sebastian Aho going right after Dermott.

There's also the CBJ video (30s in) of Dubas trying to trade down from 54OA (and out of the contentious Marner conversation) to try to net Provorov/Werenski.
Edit: presumably this was if Arizona took Marner at 3OA

That's interesting...the Leafs were at 4OA in 2015 though, right?

I have no idea what the implication is. Owner does not keep a bit of this money due to paying out the bonus already?

More serotonin for some, and cortisol for others.

He has better plays than 4 and 5 for sure ...

A lot of his really good plays are not his own goals. The guy sets up the Leafs in the OZ so beautifully. Big difference between other players who gain the zone easily (Kasperi Kapanen, Trevor Moore), and Willy who gains the zone easily and makes the next play to the right places.
