2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

You know, with the quantity of games and number of back-to-backs, this season should actually fire up some legitimate Canadian rivalries outside of the usual geographic ones, such as they are. Plus we've got two rounds of all-Canadian playoffs to add fuel to the fire.

They seem to be trying to make a Matthews vs McDavid/Laine thing happen

Well now that that's out of the way we can get to the minor issue of confirming where these teams are going to play.

NHL is meeting with provincial reps this afternoon. Ontario already has a highly subjective provision for 'high performance athletes' which we found out today does not include junior players.

10 games against Montreal: 5 Home/5 Away; 1 back-to-back; Start the year against them and finish the year playing 3 of their last 4 against Montreal.

10 games against Winnipeg: Play 3 games in a row twice; play two games in a row once

9 games against Vancouver: Play 3 games in a row once; Play two games in a row 3 times; Play one back to back

9 games against Edmonton: Play 3 games in a row once; Place two games in a row 3 times

9 games against Calgary: Play two games in a row 4 times; Play back to back twice

9 games against Ottawa: Play 3 games in a row once; Play two games in a row once; Play back to back twice (once 3 games in 4 days)

Back to Backs - 10
Back to Back against different teams - 3
Three games in 4 - 9

Literally every game will be a 4-pointer. It's gonna be wild.

I just realized that we're going to see Matthew Tkachuk 9 times, and I have a hard time envisioning him not injuring anybody in those 9 games.

I guess Mac Hollowell got the training camp invite

The fixture dates have been announce but no face off times? Wondering if they?re going to stagger games for as much tv coverage as possible as they did during the restart?

Hopefully a few ~3pm ET Leafs face offs to make UK/Ireland viewing much easier

Lots of competition for very few spots. I'm liking the depth. Hopefully Barabanov can play, Lehtonen replaces a bit of Barrie. Maybe they go 7D?

David Warsofsky?  Who dis?

He was part of the Kapanen trade

Ahhh ... a random throw-in I?m guessing.

AHL depth piece.

He's the standard AHL veteran depth defenseman Dubas (and now Gilman) have always pursued for the Marlies (Andrew Campbell, Vincent LoVerde) to shelter and shepherd their prospects. The difference is this time he's not a UFA pick up and he's smol (5'9"). He's definitely a throw-in, but a purposeful one.

Marlies defensive depth (after taxi squad assumptions*) is still a very young group
Rasmus Sandin LD 20
Timothy Liljegren RD 21
Joey Duszak RD 23
Mac Hollowell RD 22
Teemu Kivihalme LD 25
Kristians Rubins LD 23
Noel Hoefenmayer LD 21
David Warsofsky LD 30

* Marincin and Rosen to the taxi squad, Kral stays on loan

I'm assuming that the lack of start times has to do with negotiations that are ongoing for broadcast?  Seems odd to be two weeks away from opening night and not have any times confirmed for games.  Especially with what is likely to be no fans in the Canadian division to start the year and the increase in time zone inconsistencies.  Are games going to start at 8 instead of 7/730 in EST?  Are they going to start at 9 instead of 10PM when out West?

It?s clear, after talking to multiple executives the past week, that the new roster rules will be used for more than simply COVID-19 insurance.

Teams will be permitted to repeatedly move players back and forth from the taxi squad ? potentially every day. This will be especially true for clubs that need additional cap space.

?The cap shenanigans around the league this year are going to be next level,? one team source said this week.

Nothing new here really. The Taxi Squad is basically the Marlies that travel and practice with you. The Leafs have done this in the past. The issue is right now there are only 2 projected players to be waiver exempt in Lehtonen and Robertson. Nobody else is exempt so guys liked Boyd will have to clear waivers so having Sandin, Barabanov, Engvall on the taxi squad actually saves nothing.
I'm sure Dubas has spoken with Lehtonen and Barabanov about potentially losing money because both can leave if not on the active roster. It's going to be an interesting year.
