I don't follow stats closely but my eyes are telling me Matthews and Marner haven't found a good enough fit with the new auditions.

They need someone with them on that top line that gels and helps elevate them like they've had in past years. Success came mostly with Hyman in that spot in seasons past.

It doesn't appear they have the answer on the current roster unless they really shake up the lines and try every option available.

Maybe the answer's on the Marlies? I'm not sure but something has to give soon to get the #1 line firing on all cylinders and putting up the points they're accustomed to scoring and were accustomed to seeing.

If that lines going like it can, it trickles down the whole team.

I know Siegel had an article yesterday wondering if they should give the loaded up line of Nylander-Matthews-Marner another shot for a longer period of time. That could also give Kase an opportunity to jump into the 2RW spot alongside Tavares and Kerfoot.
I don't particularly like Marner, Matthews and Nylander on the same line. I like Matthews with either one of them, but there has to be an F1 to go get the puck. Nylander isn't that guy.
I like Bunting but he doesn't bring what Hyman did to the line. Ritchie is too slow to bring the F1 position on a consistant basis. I personally think the best person for the role is Kase. He has wheels. He's always going 110mph and like Hyman in the last couple years, he has hands and a creative side to actually get the puck to Matthews or Marner.

You know when I really dislike the Nylander - Matthews - Marner line? When Keefe puts it together in the playoffs when they haven't played a game together in the regular season.

Yup. I don't think they should be a permanent line, but getting them out there for a few shifts on a frequent basis is important.

Jesse covers the Golden Knights ;D

After a disappointing fundraising effort that netted $125.00, I'm told that Matthews' girlfriend donated $133,875.00 at the last minute.

I don?t think he is necessarily in the lineup, although having NHL depth for a road trip is not unheard of. They are helping a dude get some free family and friends time as he used to play in LA.

Because that?s exactly what the leafs need in their lineup, another guy who can?t score.

As long as he?s more useful than the guy he takes out of the lineup, I?m good with it.

Re: weird shooting issues for the Leafs; is it a pattern?

I think there are expectations at play where we need to update our definition of the Leafs? identity/play style from the Babcock era. Back then they were run and gun, cheat early and cheat often to get players behind the defense for high-probability rush chances. Statistically it manifested as lots of accumulated xG from a handful of highlight reel plays per game, but also a lot of dangerous plays coming back the other way due to the vertical spread of the 5 players.

Under Keefe, who seems to have really bought into Jack Han?s suggestion to invert the attack pyramid, we play a 1-1-3 NZ forecheck to reverse umbrella incoming attacks. Our offense now is about methodically setting up in the zone and breaking down fully set up defenses through puck and player movement. It results in more contested shots (legs, butts, sticks in the way) even as we work towards shots from dangerous ice.

Our defense, thanks to the automatic F3 support, is near the top of the league. We are accumulating xG through many more chances, but generally less individually dangerous ones relative to a rush style game. This play style is about the aggregate result over a large sample of games. It is still technically a bit early for our scoring stats to be considered stable. The Leafs are literally Matthews regressing to normal shooting percentages (ahem, wrist surgery), from blowing teams out.

So after 20 games, I like the fact that it looks like the Leafs can be patient in a low event game and trust that eventually their talent will get them the goal that will win the game, so as long as they don't make any mistakes they should be good.  If they keep this up, I like their chances in the playoffs.

This is sort of what I was thinking ? that we should expect the leafs shooting percentage to drop due to this strategy, and perhaps correspondingly for their opponents shooting percentage to drop too.

The coach?s thoughts on this same topic

It?s word salad, but basically, be less picky and work harder to get the missed shots back for more shots.

The front office recognizes this. The priority in seasons past was to get more skill (puck handling, shooting, passing) into the system. Now they are focused on acquiring and developing retrievers (Matthew Knies, Ondrej Ka?e, Joey Anderson, Michael Bunting sort of).

I take back everything I've said about wanting Kase in the top-6. These two should never be split up.

Unfortunately, they may not have any choice.  That fall Kampf took after getting clobbered in the head did not look good.
