It's great how any time a Canadian player goes "home" or closer to family it gets almost universally praised as a feel-good story but an American player with a pregnant wife leaves Canada to play closer to home and it's treated like an affront to the hockey gods by some folks.

I've heard reports that NJ offered him more money, and he's from Jersey, so that's a bit curious.  If he really wanted to go home, it was right there for him.

I get what you?re saying and I agree with you, I guess the scratching your head aspect to this is that Columbus is not anywhere near his hometown in jersey. He?s as far from his hometown as Ottawa is from jersey. Toronto is actually closer.

I get that he wanted to be in the US, but it?s such an odd choice when there are so many teams within the vicinity.

Unless his wife is from Ohio. Then I get it.

There's probably more to it than this, but their 3rd line winger, Eric Robinson, is apparently one of Johnny's best friends.  He's apparently one of Eric's groomsmen this summer.

*shrugs*

I'm a little surprised that he didn't get something done with New Jersey (although LeBrun has said their offer was just over $9mil, not the $10mil number that came from someone else). But I guess his focus was more just looking for a team somewhere in the northeast as opposed to specifically playing for his hometown. And the trip home from Columbus might seem like a big deal to us but it's probably not that bad for someone who can afford plane tickets with his pocket change.

Damn, Balcers was a guy I had my eye on for a potential cheap deal. Can't get much cheaper than that.

As someone who lived through the Tavares thing I think it's safe to say that any time a big deal FA leaves a market that was trying to re-sign him there's always going to be some people who heavily criticize that player.
