2022-2023 NHL trades and signings

Would I rather have Kadri at $7M than Tavares at $11M? That would definitely make me pause.

I guess but realistically the question would be Tavares at 11 million until he's 34 vs. Kadri at 7 million until he's 36 at least, more likely 37 or 38.

For what it?s worth, Tavares barely had a proper off-season to train, given that his head nearly got taken off and his knee was messed up. He clearly ran out of gas after the COVID instance, and still put up near PPG. He?s coming into this season with some real adjustments now (?lighter on his feet? is how he described it in brief).

Kadri always seems to light it up on contract years.

It's kind of crazy to think that:

A) 37/38 is considered ridiculously old; and

B) guys weren't eligible to hit UFA until they were around Kadri's age.

It is, but it's the nature of modern sports. All the players are so fit and exceptionally talented that even a slight decrease in ability due to natural aging or injury can have a huge impact.

Once he moves, the rest of the forward scoring depth market will move.

I expected Marino would move

A legit top-4 RHD in the prime of his career and signed long-term on a pretty affordable cap hit and he goes for a Travis Dermotty defenceman it seems. The salary cap can really make for some absolutely bizarre deals.

I wonder if we're in for a bit of a re-evaluation there with regards to A. The way athletes look after themselves these days I think we'll see more and more guys playing efficiently into their late 30's.

I don?t understand how that garbage canadiens roster only has 2 mil in cap space, but the leafs are presented as being handcuffed in cap hell?

The Leafs? list is not much better until 2014

Kind of feels like if a guy was drafted 10 or so years ago you wouldn't assume he would be with the same club necessarily. I don't look at Nazem Kadri and think "Boy, the Leafs moved on from him quickly."

I wonder if Kadri ends up going back to the Avalanche. They haven't brought anyone in to replace him yet, and their 2nd best C on the roster now is J.T. Compher. Other than Kadri there aren't really any UFA centres left. Stastny is better suited to the wing this late in his career, and Rodrigues isn't going to hold down a 2C spot.

Colorado currently has about $3.75mil in cap space remaining. If they trade Compher away that gives them about $7.25mil in cap space. That's probably on the low end of what Kadri was initially looking for but still being unsigned almost a week after free agency opens probably says something about the offers he's been getting, at least from teams he's actually interested in playing for.

Calgary and St. Louis miiiiight be swapping wingers.

Edit: unless one of the teams that whiffed on Gaudreau shake their assets and brandish their cap space. Kadri might get frozen out of his top couple of choices now that this is an open possibility.

I deleted that tweet post (if you saw it) re: Gaudreau's Player's Tribune screenshot. It is not in the actual article and I should have checked first!
