2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

He's played a total of 82 professional hockey games in his draft+2,3,4 seasons. Those are arguably the most crucial years of a NHL players development. 31 NHL games over 3 seasons. Next season I feel like regardless of how he looks at camp he needs to go back down to the AHL and play 20 minutes a night for at least half the season before getting a look again. He needs to basically reset how he thinks/feels/plays the game and that isn't going to happen for him at the NHL level right away.

Yeah. At this point, he needs rebuild so many of his core attributes that he might even need to spend some time in the ECHL at first. The talent is NHL level, but the rest needs to be rebuilt in a way I didn't really realize earlier in the season.

I know nobody wants to give up on him, but ... I think he's now on the "long shot" category.

I'm not sure I'd go that far (though, it is close), but he has definitely lost that "top prospect" sheen.

I actually feel like it?s one of those situations where it might suit him to go elsewhere.

Not because he?s done anything wrong or can?t make it as a Leaf, but just for that sort of complete fresh start almost mentally as much as physically.

I don?t want him to, and I don?t think he brings much back if it?s a trade. But it might be what?s best for him.

I remember when he scored that overtime goal against the Stars, my first thought was "trade him before he gets injured!" But who wants to give up on a kid at that point that seemed to be putting the tools in the toolbox?

Holmberg to the Marlies.  Obviously sicker than we want him to be and they want a roster spot/body to take on the road trip if he isn't good to go for Thursday.

Maybe this is just a temporary demotion but I think it's worth noting that Holmberg has somewhat struggled lately. Over the Leafs' last 15 games his CF% is 45.2 (lowest among forwards other than Simmonds who only has 3 GP), GF% is 45.45, and xGF% is 41.22%. Throw in the fact that he isn't very good on draws and generally doesn't get used for defensive zone face-offs and I think you can make the argument that at the very least the 4C spot probably isn't the ideal position for him right now. Granted the Leafs have struggled to find a successful trio there almost all season.

It's a fair point.  I just hope that we call someone else up and don't keep putting Simmonds in the lineup though.

MLHS makes the case for not re-signing Dubas early:

Since they agree with me, it's very excellent analysis.

Current way the ASG is formatted good players will be kept off every year. Not much you can do there.

Matthews has to be there. He's one of the top stars in the league. Sucks for Willy though who def deserves to be there this season.

Yup. Between the small rosters and needing to have every team represented, there's going to be a lot of snubs.

There have been times this season when Nylander has run into traffic en route to a game while navigating downtown Toronto?s clogged arteries. Nylander will realize he might be late if he keeps trying to grind through traffic coming south on Bay Street, ?where turning into the rink is awful,? he attests.

In a rare moment of hurriedness, he?ll call veteran Leafs assistant equipment manager Tom Blatchford and tell him where he is. Blatchford will then leave the Scotiabank Arena, run to Nylander and drive his car, inch-by-inch, through traffic while Nylander beats the traffic on foot to the arena.

This is? kind of deranged.

At the very least you'd think if that was a big concern or frequent occurrence you'd just get the guy to drive you the whole way.

Solution: Take Lyft instead and pack a skateboard.  Then if traffic gets to be too much, abandon ship and operationalize Plan B.

I was hoping Nylander would go to the ASG so a) that he could have the experience of it, considering his strong year, and b) so that Matthews could get more rest days for whatever has kept him out of the lineup the prior week.

There's definitely some bad luck involved, that's for sure. But some of the more astute members on the forum (I'm looking at you, Herman and CTB) clearly noted in the past that Robertson's stature, fearless approach, and skating mechanics (hunched over) expose him to greater risk of injury that other similar players (Caufield, for example).

I really hope he can get this figured out because he's going to be running out of chances real soon.  I'm not convinced he's going to be the player we all hope he will be for the Leafs, but these injuries may eventually put his NHL career at risk.

Teehee astute sounds like ass toot ;)

Looks like this one was a wear and tear shoulder injury that just happened to line up with the organizational goals of tanking, suppressing a young star?s early production numbers for future cap reasons, and setting up some long term health for a key contributor when the team is finally good again.
