2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Really wonderful to see our deepest centre depth immediately tested with all 3 Cs getting dinged at the same time playing a bottom feeder.

Don't worry, Hedman will be back at 110% for the playoffs while our guys are still on the IR.

Zeus hath decreed it.

Tavares in extra grey? Wonder if he's banged up from Sat. I think if ROR is on the IR the Leafs can use Holmberg or Steeves as an emergency loan because they'll be under 12 forwards, no?

Does Knies take up a call up spot or does he skip that by being a free agent signing?

The ROR LTIR stint (presumably) seems like a logical thing.  I'm expecting 4 weeks for his finger.  No point in having him try and play through the latter stages of recovery and then have an ineffective shot all playoffs.  24 day would let him come back with 9 games left in the season and he would miss 10 games.

As others have said the playoffs is the only thing that matters so I'd rather him sit out than play hurt.  Same goes for any of our top players.

I don't believe the non-COVID emergency is position specific in that way. Teams just need to be able to dress 18 healthy skaters, which the Leafs can. They'd also have to had played a game with less than 18 skaters to qualify for it.

Unless he gets assigned to the Marlies, he's not a call up.
Knies can't get sent to the Marlies as he'll be signing after the deadline so he won't count.

I'm pretty sure it's still the 12F, 6D, 2G setup unless they changed it last CBA?

The CBA says - and has always said - 18 skaters.

THe 12/6 part was only for COVID related emergencies or when teams have cap room. Neither of those situations apply to the Leafs.

He'll be back in time to get a few games in before the playoffs.  He's our Kucherov 2023 Edition.

I'll just lay down my marker now.  "Success" in the playoffs this year is winning R1 against TB.  Boston looks unstoppable, and I can't see us or anyone else beating them, unless they lose a key players to injury.

If the Leafs win R1, I'm OK with re-upping Dubas.  I don't like the Sandin trade one bit but otherwise I think he did a good job bolstering the team for playoff hockey.

I like re-upping Dubas no matter what, and I also believe I will find much solace in winning one round only, but that also makes me sad.

Too early for me to conclude much about Dubas.
My head is still spinning from the 9 dman roster.

Someone in the Leafs organization deserves credit for assembling a top 4 NHL roster. I think Dubas has a lot of fingerprints on that. They only have about a 10% chance of winning the Cup - which is roughly 'normal' for a top 4 team. 90% chance of tee times in April/May.

If they lose to Tampa, Tampa is a very good team with a great goalie. If their goalie is hot, even Boston will have a tough time beating them.

I'm still rattled from looking at Boston's roster to start the season wondering if they'll make the playoffs. Whoops!

Top four NHL teams in win% include the Leafs, Bruins, Canes & Devils - all in the east. Rangers & Lightning are not far behind in win% with the Rangers improved at the deadline. The competitive wild card race in the east could produce a good team that upsets. If the Bruins don't roll over everyone, it will be a war getting to the Cup final. The western clubs may have an easier, less physically wearing path that gives them a better chance in the finals. Maybe we'll need those 9 dmen ... (which means we might have got deep ..)

I can't think clearly that far ahead. I'm still trying to get my head around these 6-7 new guys on our roster ...

It's hard to imagine Boston not winning it all.  In terms of W/L and goal diff, they are insanely ahead of everyone.  Sure, upsets can happen.  But they are turning in the most flawless season since the MTL machine of the late 70s.  I can't stand the Bruins but I have to acknowledge how good they are right now.

The way they win/lose is still going to matter to me.  If they get completely shut down like in the Montreal series I think it's an indictment of his double down on the top heavy lineup.  If the goaltending falters its an indictment of him dumpster diving for Murray/Samsonov.

If they get bested by a Boston team that simply looks unbeatable I'd easily extend him
