2022 Training Camp Thread

This really only affects the 4th line of the roster, so it's essentially negigible, apart from not allowing us to bank cap space in the first month (whatever Liljegren's timeline is).

Technically this doesn't affect the NHL roster, but I feel bad for them

I have a question...does he get NHL money while injured?

That's a good question.  I think for that to happen Leafs would have to have him on LTIR, which they probably don't want to do so they can accrue cap during the season. Kinda sucks for him only making $70K instead of 750k but then he probably wouldn't have been in the NHL for very long even if healthy.  He's way down the depth chart.

He's making $400k in the AHL.

As I vaguely recall, there is a formula for players like him - depends on how many NHL games he played and how many last season and for which franchise - stuff like that. Since he's got some NHL games, he could get a small % of his NHL rate on top of his AHL pay.

Hey! I don't think we've heard from you in a while 🙂

Oh I had no idea how it worked I just assumed on the AHL salary since many players make that. Still sucks for him to make about half but better than what I'm pulling in lol

In his best realistic? case, he arguably came into camp at least behind the 7 dmen from last year plus Benn & Mete (and quite possibly others). The chances of him winning a spot playing 4-5 of the 7 preseason games were pretty small. Injuries to other dmen were probably his best shot. Muzzin, Benn & Liljegren nearly accommodated him. However, financially, he's probably ahead of the game a little in the short term from his injury.

Longer term, major shoulder surgery could hamper his ability to play physical the rest of his career. That could be very tough/tragic and co$tly.

It may or may not be to the Leafs advantage to place him on LTIR. Might depend on Tavares oblique injury. Being it is Tavares' second, he might not be back in the minimum 3 weeks they mentioned. With Leafs so close to the cap, Tavares going on LTIR would buy them some time to shake out their roster and adding Dahlstrom to LTIR might be a no brainer at that point (if it isn't already).

Most of these guys were on Marlies deals, so nothing too surprising there.

Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, Alex Steeves, Bobby McMann, Joey Anderson, Nick Robertson, Pontus Holmberg, Filip Kral, William Villeneuve, Mikko Kokkonen (has he played?), Axel Rindell, Marshall Rifai (ELC candidate), and all the goalies highlight the remaining prospects at camp. Bolded are the ones that really have a shot at a spot (over Simmonds, Clifford, Gaudette).

I don't think Joey Anderson has really shown much to warrant bolding at the moment...

I forgot Nick Abbruzzese as well, but he's in the same boat as SDA.

I agree; Anderson is underwhelming. The only reason I highlight him is he is not exempt from waivers and was the Marlies' leading scorer, so he's not nothing. He also has the defensive reliability you'd want from a bottom-sixer. His footspeed is holding him back from making an NHL-level impact with this team, so I suspect they'll try to send him down with the largest glut of waiver bodies and yo-yo him as a road trip call-up as necessary until the clock runs out.

I think Robertson and Holmberg start with the team and get passed back down to play 1st line minutes when we're healthy up front again (if ever?) since they are waiver-exempt.

I haven't seen lots but what I have, I've liked Steeves. Leafs seemed to like a bunch of his college teammates.

Again, haven't seen him much, but McMann caught my eye some.

I think Anderson is more capable than he's showing. Maybe he's looking at the RW depth chart and figuring his best career move is elsewhere. He's playing like that.

Robertson being waiver exempt could hold him back. Holmberg too though his case isn't as strong.

Fair amount of pressure on Gaudette tonight. Tough luck on the shoulder injury. He had tough health luck previously until they figured it out. I was hoping his might spring from that ...

Zach Aston-Reese is a little unique. Off hand, I cannot recall a player showing up on a PTO and from the outset, media is saying "oh, everyone knows they're going to sign him ..". Sure he may deserve it. But it is unusual, isn't it? I do not remember it happening like that before. Go ahead and sign him then - what were they waiting for if it is that decided. Now, I hear he's starting to look for more $ - $100k above the minimum ... From afar, an odd situation.

I could be wrong but there's a chance his contract is being delayed because of cap stuff. I think they'll wait for day 1 of the regular season to sort out all their LTIR stuff with Liljegen before they finalize his deal.
