2023-24 Marlies/Growlers Discussion

Still think the best thing for him would be to compete for a starters role somewhere in the KHL next season, but with that possibly not being an option I guess may as well bring him here. Just don't know where or how often he'll play.

This further points to an ECHL deal in the works.

Woll
UFA Goalie

NHL Third (Matt Murray in my mind)
Den Hildeby
Vyacheslav Peksa

Artur Akhtyamov
Luke Cavallin
Keith Petruzzelli (RFA) don't know if he re-signs to a Marlies deal

I think it's probably fair to assume Petruzzeli won't be getting another NHL deal. Dryden McKay and Luke Cavallin's 2-year AHL deals would also be expiring now I believe. I'd guess between those 3 only one of them returns for ECHL minutes (which of course has yet to be determined but difficult to see the Leafs go without an affiliate there).

I'm mostly with you on a Murray return over Jones for the 3G spot. Although the thing that works in Jones' favour is he seemed very content with his back-up to the back-up role in the organization this past season and didn't need to eat up much playing time with the Marlies. He only ended up playing 5 games in the AHL. I would guess Murray would want more playing time to prove he could maybe still be a NHL guy.

Oh yeah, forgot about McKay. We can always loan one or two of them out to another AHL team in need, with the slight downside of less control over development plans.

I'm quetly optimistic about him but he really needs to start being tested in the AHL before I start caring. He also just hasn't played enough games. Also hoping Peksa puts together a better season than last.

Are we against giving Dennis Hildeby a chance to play NHL games in the event of injury this year.  Last year the argument was that he's a rookie and you don't want to rush him.  His stats dropped off a bit in the 2nd half (sitting as the backup for a few weeks without playing probably didn't help) but a .913 SV% on a pretty mediocre Marlies team over 41 games.  I'm not sure that I would want him to be the #3 guy unless we sign a really solid backup/1B to go with Woll but it's not like he's an 18 year old.  He'll be 23 at the start of the year.

I think there are three ECHL teams without an affiliate right now so I'm assuming the Leafs will latch on to one of those teams.

I wouldn't necessarily be afraid to play Hildeby for a game or two (and think the Leafs should have given him one when he was called up this past season) but the potential for Woll to miss an extended period of time due to his injury history makes me nervous about having to rely on him as a back-up to whatever 1B we get for a month or more.

Agreed. A spot start here or there is okay, but unless he really shines in the AHL, I don't think an extended period on the NHL roster is a good idea yet.

Best case scenario: Talbot holds the fort as 1B next season. Hildeby shines in the AHL all season and if needed plays some games in the NHL where he doesn't look out of place. Then he becomes an option to be a full-time back-up in 25/26 where he'll still be waivers exempt fom another season so if he does struggle he can go back to the Marlies risk free.

Solid article here updating the status of all the Marlies heading into the offseason.

The Toronto Marlies are signing former RHD Ryan McCleary to an AHL contract for 2024-25.  Good news, he was most impressive at the rookie camp. Nice to add to our D depth. I think our D this year is going to be very much improved.

Glad to see Clifford sticking around. Crazy to think he's only 33 years old with all the miles on his body (was a full time NHLer/goon at 19). All things considered he put up a pretty respectable AHL season last year (10 goals, 28 points in 54 games).

He can beat up anyone getting too close to Alex
