2023-24 NHL Thread

Real cool league.

But you CAN wear a coloured helmet with your white jersey now. So yknow. Progressive and liberal.

The NHL needs to protect the feelings of the homophobes.  And the only correct way to do that is to not support anything.  Now excuse me while we have daily Military appreciation segments.

Oh and with CtB's update he wore the mask anyway during warmup so the NHL yet again shoots itself in the foot for absolutely no reason.
I know there was a discussion a week or so ago with Nik about how the NHL is smart enough to know the limitations of player marketing but honestly decisions like this make me question that.  I'm not sure that they do know how to market things because they consistently make the wrong decisions for absolutely no reason.  You got bad press and the only thing this highlighted is that MAF is awesome.

Just like the pride thing, the NHL brings about a massive amount of negative attention to the league for absolutely no good reason all for them to cave at the last minute anyway.

I really don't see why the NHL is against players making a choice for inclusive causes. I don't think it's that hard to understand. I guess the problem would be if the player wanted to openly support a non inclusive cause but how many of them are really out there?

Wasn?t sure where to stick this, but thought it might be of interest.

Former Chelsea English Premier league winning shutout record holding, Arsenal and 124 time capped Czechia football (soccer) goalkeeper Petr Cech made his professional hockey debut last night at the age of 41.

Must be the first player to play in the top professional football and top professional hockey league of a country?

Saved both the shots he faced in a 4 minute appearance. He grew up playing both sports but chose football when he had to make the career decision and I guess did alright!

Yesterday, he was trending for completely unsubstantiated rumours surrounding his removal from the team, and this new official statement does nothing to dispel them. Unless there is an NHLPA appeal to follow, they should very much try to clarify, otherwise the other parties implicated in the rumours continue to wear it.

If anything, it supports them.

I don't know about that. This was likely leading to termination regardless. No point in delaying it because of that stuff.

With that said my belief that that thing is what led to this has increased from about 0.5% to 2.5% now.

Yeah, my initial guess was something drug related a la Mike Richards, and I still think that's the case, but in regards to other rumour...

I was mostly referring to the Hawks? statement - it supports them, even if not in a hugely significant way. It feels more plausible now than it did yesterday.

Is the thing we are talking about the Fountain's of Wayne kind of thing.  I get why it could be a contract termination kind of thing as you probably don't want that in your lockerroom, particularly when a player is there in a veteran mentorship kind of role.

I feel like if this was a drug related thing that we have seen a lot of guys go through the player assistance program without getting sent away from the team and having your contract terminated.

I get why you might not want to make things public but this seems to be moving in a way that just puts more eyes and attention on the whole situation.

As LK says, if it was drug related (at least, drug use related), it?s more likely he?d end up in the player assistance program instead of contract termination.

No way Chicago could terminate the contract if it was a substance abuse thing, I'll say that right now.

And kudos to everyone in this board for not diving in the dumps. Good on ya! 🍻

Davidson confirms it was a workplace issue that was reported and investigated and had nothing to do with other players or their families.
