2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

You may think that 82 regular season games are too much, but before yesterday's game, we had basically a 3 way tie in the Atlantic division.

If the Sens beats Tampa today, Leafs could open some room...

The Leafs v Panthers game was like a real playoff game.

Except for the Panthers who didn't bring out their dirty play they normally bring in the playoffs......... until near the end of the game when Bennett slewfoots Tavares.

Yeah, that's a "whoopsy, didn't notice you there. My bad"

Update on the chase for 1st place in the Atlantic. Magic numbers for the Leafs to eliminate the teams behind them:

TB - 12
FLA - 11
OTT - 5

Unfortunately for Bennet, because of his past actions, he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt.
Bennett had three bump ins with Tavares.... the first one was a hit by Tavares where it looks like Bennett threw him self to the ice trying to draw a penalty. Watch the replay again.

Then he makes two attempts at Tavares and the second one was totally aimless with respect to the play.... he's skating away from the play to the back of the net with seconds on the clock. He gives the slew foot. Then turns back to view his work: Tavares flat on his back.

Looked intentional to me. All three interactions.

Ottawa beating Tampa was nice, but its also just a reminder that we aren't going to have an easy opponent regardless of who we play. Maurice's quote about, you have to beat a team from Florida and a team from Ontario was an accurate one. Although of the teams I would still much rather play Ottawa than Tampa/Florida first.

Ottawa 11-6-2 (.631 PT%) since the 4Nations tournament. But the breakdown of their record

Wins: San Jose, Chicago (OT), New York R (OT), Detroit, Philly, Boston, Toronto, New Jersey, Detroit, Columbus, Tampa
Losses: Montreal x2, Winnipeg, Colorado, Buffalo x2
OTL: Washington, Pittsburgh

Not exactly the most impressive breakdown of wins. They are taking care of business but in contrast the Leafs are 13-5-2 since the break and we have been critical of the teams performance despite putting up better results.

Ottawa could absolute beat the pants off the Leafs but so could Tampa or Florida. I'll take guaranteed home ice in the first round (potentially the second round) and the team that is 10 points back in the standings.

That's no way to treat your future linemate.
