2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

It would be extremely Leafy if they win the division, but Florida falls to 4th and beats them in the first round.
What would be the anti-thesis of Leafy is if they first beat Brady Tkachuk in a series and then beat Matthew Tkachuk in a series.

AM34 would redeem himself as the top Yank on ice after the 4Nations.

MSN: Robertson makes case to be in Leafs' Game 1 playoff lineup after two-goal performance
Toronto captain Auston Matthews scored to give him nine straight 30-goal seasons, breaking a tie with Darryl Sittler for the most in franchise history.

He's also the seventh NHL player all-time to begin a career with nine consecutive 30-goal seasons, joining Alex Ovechkin (15), Mike Gartner (15), Wayne Gretzky (13), Jari Kurri (19), Mike Bossy (10) and Bryan Trottier (9).

Toronto winger Mitch Marner, meanwhile, became the third player in franchise history with a 70-assist season, joining Sittler and Doug Gilmour.

Toronto 8-1-1; Tampa 6-3-1 and Florida 3-6-1 in their last 10. Ottawa has been added to the board as they have played themselves into a chance to get out of the wildcard. They are 5-4-1 in their last 10.

Home Games: Leafs (2), Panthers (4), Lightning (4), Senators (5)
Road Games: Leafs (4), Panthers (2), Lightning (2), Senators (1)
Back to Backs: Leafs (2), Panthers (2), Lightning (0), Senators (0)
3 Game in 4: Leafs (1), Panthers (2), Lightning (0), Senators (0)
Games against team on 0 days rest: Leafs (1), Panthers (0), Lightning (4), Senators (4)
Games against playoff teams: Leafs (4), Panthers (2), Lightning (2), Senators (1)
Games against teams within 3 points of a playoff spot: Leafs (4), Panthers (2), Lightning (2), Senators (1)

Tie-breakers:
1) PTs%

Leafs > Lightning (+4) > Panthers (+6) > Senators (+10)

Ottawa's elimination number is 2 because they lose the next tie-breaker for regulation wins so need to beat the Leafs outright.
Tampa's elimination number is 9.
Florida's elimination number is 7 (2 Leafs Regulation wins or Florida wins in OT would make it 6)

2) RW

Toronto (39) > Tampa (38) > Florida (35) > Ottawa (32)

Ottawa can't catch the Leafs on Regulation wins so we hold the tie-breaker if tied in points.
The Leafs need 3 regulation wins or Panthers games to go to OT to hold this tiebreaker. The Leafs need a combination of 6 wins/games to go to OT to hold it against the Lightning

3) ROW

Toronto (46) > Tampa (42) > Ottawa (40) > Panthers (39)

The Panthers can't catch the Leafs on ROWs so we hold the tie-breaker if tied in points and regulation wins. They need 1 win/OTW or Ottawa Shootout or Loss to clinch. They need three wins/OTWs or Tampa SO/losses.

4) Total Wins

Toronto (47) > Tampa (44) > Florida (44) > Ottawa (41)

The Leafs need 1 win/Ottawa loss to lock this one up. They need 4 wins/Tampa and Florida losses to lock this tiebreaker up

5) Head to Head

Toronto is 3-0-0 against Tampa with one game remaining so hold the head to head tie-breaker
Florida is 2-1-0 against Toronto so the best Toronto can do is make this a wash with 2 games remaining
Florida is 2-1-0 against the Lightning so the best Tampa can do is make this a wash with 1 game remaining
Ottawa is 3-0-0 against Toronto so hold this tie-breaker.
Ottawa is 2-2-0 against Tampa so are tied.
Ottawa is 2-1-0 against Florida. With two home games the first Ottawa win is ignored and they are tied 1-1-0.

Ottawa and Florida already are eliminated before Head-to-Head record. Tampa is 0-3-0 against the Leafs so the Leafs hold this tiebreaker if we are tied in points, regulation wins, ROWs and total wins.

6) Goal differential

Tampa (70) > Florida (30) > Toronto (29) > Ottawa (3)

This doesn't matter for the Leafs as they hold tie-breakers against everyone before this

7) Goals scored

Tampa (271) > Toronto (250) > Florida (237) > 218

This doesn't matter for the Leafs as they hold tie-breakers against everyone before this

Ovie about to break Gretzky's record is impressive.

If AM continues on his 9 year avarage pace, he wil also break that record in 9 years (and in fewer games played)... He (and Marner) could be the best duo on Maple Leaf history (imagining they resign Marner and won't let him simply walkaway).

And it won't mean anything if they don't find a way to put together a team that wins a Cup. At least Ovechkin has done that once (so far).

That’s one of the major carrots I’d be dangling at Marner to get him to re-sign.
For sure. He'll probably pass Sundin as the top Leafs scorer or 2nd if Matthews overtakes him in the next 3 years.
He'll have the most assists as a Leaf - probably in 2 seasons after this.
He'd be near the top of Leafs all time playoff scoring - I think everyone in that top ten except Wendel Clark is in the HHoF
Add in his international play like 4 Nations and his stellar CHL career
His cause would be helped by being a top Leaf vs finishing his career in Utah or wherever

I think Sundin, Sittler, Salming & Lindros and many others found it meant something without a Cup win.
With a 32 team league, there will be a lot more players finishing their career without a Cup win.

Original six: 23 players out of 138 (16.7%) win a Cup each year. in a 10 year career, 16% raw chance a player doesn't win a Cup. Only two playoff rounds.
32 Teams: 23 players out of 736 (3.1%) win a Cup each year. in a 10 year career, 73% raw chance a player doesn't win a Cup. Four playoff rounds.

Some fans may not be able to grasp that but I'm pretty sure the Hockey Hall of Fame can figure out that math.
Increasingly, there will be more and more great NHLers who never win a Cup. We're already seeing that from the 21 team NHL for example.

Here's some recent examples

Cupless Hockey Hall of Fame inductees
2020 Jarome Iginla, Doug Wilson
2022 Daniel Alfredsson, Roberto Luongo, Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin
2023 Pierre Turgeon, Henrik Lundqvist
2024 Jeremy Roenick, Shea Weber

Get ready to play Florida in round 1 if we win the division They got shut out again to Detroit while Ottawa won 4-0 against Columbus.

I couldn't care less if any of the Leaf players get into the hall of fame. I care if they win the Cup. I would hope they would care about that too, even if a sizeable percentage of the fanbase doesn't seem to for some reason.

If you watch those induction ceremonies, the majority of players seem to care that they're going into the hall of fame as do their family, friends, players who played with them and fans.
Currently, the Leafs have about the 5th best pts win% in the NHL. I saw a few sites give them around a 6% chance of winning the Cup. So there is about a 94% chance you will be disappointed this year - roughly similar to the prior recent years before the core 4 has skated one playoff minute. The fans of the best teams have about an 85% chance of being disappointed.

Bill Torrey, who won 4 Cups as GM of the Islanders, said that beyond talent, you need health, puck luck & calls going your way. Otherwise, if it was that certain, you wouldn't need to play the games.
